Bridge repairs moving along as planned

VDOT officials have contracted Bryant Construction to renovate the Tides Mill Creek Bridge on 205 near Wilkersons in Colonial Beach.

The bridge has been closed since the beginning of November.
Bryant Construction  is performing five months worth of work in four months. The plan is to remove the existing roadway from the bridge. Using the existing supports and adding more, a new surface will be added. Resulting in an elevation of approximately two feet and widening the bridge to 30 feet with three foot shoulders on each side.
The project cost for the Bridge upgrade for VDOT is $3.7 million. Over 1.3 million of which covers the contract with Bryant Construction.

Bryant Construction is under a strict time schedule of four months, but VDOT officials have worked with Bryant before and are confident that they will finish on schedule.

Currently the entire top layer of roadway has been stripped.

Motorists are still trying to get used to the detour which is State Rt. 631, otherwise known as Longfield Rd. Several people have tried to use alternate routes such as Pomona Rd., located behind Halls, and Cedar Hill Rd. but both roads are very narrow and many accidents have been reported on these roads since the bridge closed.

On Monday Dec. 31 an accident was reportedly caused by black ice on Pomona Rd.

Motorists are urged to take the dedicated detour which VDOT has promised to maintain as a primary road throughout the bridge closing.
