Colonial Beach man killed in crash

Westmoreland County – A man is dead following a three vehicle crash in Westmoreland County that took place Saturday morning, November 20, 2010.  At 5:35 a.m., Virginia State Police Senior Trooper O. B. Moody was called to the scene on Route 3, Kings Highway, east of Route 634, Meadow Lane.

A 1995 Ford Contour was traveling westbound on Route 3, when the driver stopped to make a left turn and yield the right of way to a 2000 Freightliner Dump Truck heading eastbound.  The Contour was struck in the rear by a 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass and pushed into the eastbound lane of travel and struck by the dump truck.

The Contour’s driver, Donald P. Blass, 53, was not wearing his safety and died at the scene.  The Cutlass’ driver, Rose M. Preston, 53, was not injured in the crash and was wearing her safety belt.  Preston was charged with reckless driving.  The dump trucks driver, Jeffrey T. Smith, 47, was not injured in the crash and was wearing his safety belt.  Smith was traveling from Culpeper to Montross hauling gravel at the time of the crash.

The Virginia State Police Division One Accident Reconstruction Team assisted in the on-going investigation of the crash.  The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control during the investigation.  The roadway was reopened shortly before 10:00 a.m.

Deceased Driver:  Donald P. Blass, 53, Colonial Beach, Va.

Oldsmobile Driver:  Rose M. Preston, 53, Colonial Beach, Va.

Dump Truck Driver:  Jeffrey T. Smith, 47, Mitchells, Va.
