CB celebrates 120 year anniversary

History to be proud of and a place where you can be proud to live.

It’s proper to celebrate the birth of a town that is unique in so many ways, a town that 120 years ago, on February 25, 1892, was incorporated. This incorporation was the beginning, not just of a town, but of a community of God-loving, hardworking families, many whom are descendants of the founders. And that’s something to be proud of!

In 1492, the start of a great country began. 400 years later, in 1892, Colonial Beach became a town, after having first being settled in 1650. That was 362 years ago when Andrew Monroe first settled here. Andrew Monroe was the great-great grandfather of the 5th President of the United States, James Monroe.

In honor of the occasion, the Colonial Beach Town Council has passed a proclamation expressing its pride, commitment, and dedication to the founding principles which

distinguish our town’s history.

It reads: “The upcoming date of Saturday, February the 25th 2012, will commemorate the 120th anniversary of the town’s incorporation. Therefore, let it be resolved, that the Town Council, town staff, and all the citizens and visitors of the Town of Colonial Beach acknowledge with pride the historical importance of February 25, 2012 as the date commemorating and celebrating the incorporation of our town.” It is signed by Mayor Frederick C. Rummage

Looking at Colonial Beach history we can see our beginning as a town, but we should not forget the very beginning of this community and the native American Indians who raised their families and cultivated the crops, fished, and hunted in this place we now call Colonial Beach. The Indians cared for this land. They made paths we now call roads, and lived mostly from the rivers that surround the area, just as we have from our beginnings here.

There is much that has made the community what it is, such as fishing of all kinds, presidents, inventors, artists and writers. It has a history as a fun town with its gambling, and don’t forget the old board walk, the old churches and old houses.

There are year-round art shows, fresh seafood, boating, car racing, lots of festivals, off track horse racing and the view of the Potomac. It is a vacation and retirement town for some and year-round home for hard working people with a southern hospitality style that brings visitors back, and makes for an interesting community. It’s not a sleepy little fishing village anymore. Colonial Beach is a town to be proud of as declared in council’s proclamation.
