CB School Board looks at repair options

School Superintendent Donna Power has been charged by the School Board to provide detailed information at the October School Board meeting on the costs both to repair or replace the middle school building and the elementary school building, both of which were damaged in the recent earthquake and hurricane.  Power is gathering costs for building a new school and cafeteria, repairing the damage to the existing elementary and middle

school, or installing a new middle school modpod behind the high school.

Councilman Shane Buzby, who was in the audience at the board meeting, spoke up, saying “The elementary school is in need of repair.  Now is the time to look into building a new school.”

Heather Foley of the Miller Foley Group, who is performing the yearly audit on town and school finances, reported to the board that she has begun examining the books and accounts for the school system.

“We are really hopeful we’re going to have a good process this year,” Foley reported.
Wes Clark of Robinson, Farmer and Cox, informed the board that his firm has issued a “clean opinion” on the recent audit of the School Activity Funds accounts.  The “clean opinion,” according to Clark, was the highest rating on the scale of opinions.  Clark noted there was one minor finding that came up during the audit, which was one check that only had one signature rather than the required two signatures.

Daphne Davidson requested the board approve her use of a classroom at the elementary school two Saturdays each month to provide a Driver Education Improvement class.  The board agreed to allow Davidson the use of the classroom and further agreed to Power’s recommendation to charge Davidson an equivalent of two hours of custodial time each time the improvement class is held.
