CB Schools taking safety seriously

Colonial Beach School Interim Superintendent Kathleen Beane announced by phone that officials from the town, school and police met this weekend to discuss safety issues at the school.

CBPD have been preforming active shooter training beginning their first segment during spring break in 2012. The training consisted of practicing tactical drills to clear classrooms in the event of a school shooting after a short tour of the building to familiarize new officers of the high school’s layout.

The program went on to practice other aspects of active shooter training in undisclosed locations.

In light of last week’s tragedy in Connecticut the school is stepping up security at the schools for the remainder of the week until the Christmas break.

Colonial Beach Police Chief Kenneth Blevins wrote in an email, “Officials will be meeting again after the holidays to re-evaluate and discuss further actions at that time, if needed.”

Blevins said the group discussed a course of action as a result of the Sandy Hook incident. “We, as a team are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our children. Additional security measures have been initiated which will include additional police presence on school properties through school closings for the holidays.”

Beane has asked parents in her phone message to impress upon students the seriousness of the situation.
