Fourteen people kicked off the year with a shocking splash into the Potomac to help raise money for the Colonial Beach Elementary School library.
Danny Owens, owner of Ledo Pizza at the Beach, came up with the idea several months ago and made plans with Caroline Tiram from the Riverboat. But Owens had forgotten about the polar plunge plans until Thursday, Dec. 30 when Tiram gave him a call.
“We are very surprised at the interest and support that was generated in such a short amount of time,” Owens said. “Honestly, I didn’t think that two days would be enough time to pull it off. Caroline’s last-minute efforts really deserve most of the credit.”
The event, which is intended to be the inaugural dip for an annual tradition, raised $1,156. Another $400-$500 dollar in pledged donations are still expected. Continued donations may be dropped off at Ledo Pizza.
“We’re really excited that it generated so much support in such a short time,” Owens said. “I think we made a new tradition at the Beach.”
