Fifth-graders give historical presentations to CB council

Members of Council admitted to learning new facts about their town and welcomed Superintendant Donna Power to continue the new tradition of allowing students to make presentations to the council at regular meetings. Some of the facts presented included:
The Bell House was built in 1883 and was added to the list of historical places in 1987. It was also home to Alexander Graham Bell. On March 10, 1876 Alexander Graham Bell made the first telegraph. He spent many summers here in what we call the Bell House.

In 1933 the Chesapeake Potomac Hurricane destroyed the amusement park and three piers. Hurricane Hazel in 1954 hit from Haiti to Canada with wind gusts up to 99 miles an hour in Colonial Beach. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel left damage to many of the properties in town.
Conflicts between Virginia and Maryland fishermen who disputed over what water belonged to them resulted in what was known as the “Oyster Wars.” When the oysters became less in numbers the fighting became more intense.  In 1868 Maryland started a special Maritime Navy to patrol the Potomac. The feud did not end until 1962 when laws were created to stop the fighting.
Colonial Beach became incorporated in February of 1982 and has the second largest beach in Virginia.
In March of 1894, The Colonial Beach Fire Department was created. The fire department has grown considerably and now responds to about 600 calls a year. In 2004 the Fire Department got its first boat and a year later it got its first tanker.
