What’s on the November ballot in CB?

Colonial Beach election ballots will have many choices in November.

Aside from the obvious presidential election, residents will be voting for a new mayor and to fill four other vacant seats on town council and voters three write-in candidates for the school board office.

Presidential elections usually result in more than just two presidential candidates. Kristin M Hicks said that aside from the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates others independents could come up before the election.

In the 2008 presidential election, for example, the ballot resulted in four added pairs running for presidency.

Mayor

Colonial Beach will be voting to fill the mayor’s position. Mayor Frederick C. Rummage announced early this year that he would not be running for re-election in 2012. The deadline for running on the ballot has come and gone for both the council seats and the school board office.

Only Councilman Mike Ham has secured a position on the ballot for mayor. Ham’s council seat does not expire until 2014, so if he runs unopposed or wins against any write-in candidates his seat will be vacant as of Dec. 31, when he would take office as mayor. Leaving the council to fill his vacant seat by appointment.

Council

The four seats on council are that of Burkett Lyburn, voted in in May of 2008, Tommy Edwards, Tim Curtin and Jim Chiarello all appointed positions.

Both Tommy Edwards and Tim Curtin hold seats that would have originally expired on December 31, 2012. However Jim Chiarello took over former Councilman Shane Buzby’s seat, which originally would expire on December 31, 2014.

Law prohibits any appointed member to exceed two years, and the seat must be automatically filled by voter’s choice at the first available election. Law also requires that the seat be restored to its original voting cycle.

Chiarello was appointed to take over Buzby’s seat until Dec. 31, 2012, so as to not exceed the two year limit. A special election for Chiarello’s seat will take place in November and will fill the seat until the original term ends on Dec. 31, 2014, restoring the seat to its original voting cycle.

Chiarello is the only candidate registered on the special election ballot to fill his position.

Running and registered on the ballot to fill the other three seats on the council are Tommy Edwards, Tim Curtin and Wanda Goforth.

No write-in candidates have come forward at this time for council positions, including mayor.

School Board

School Board Chairman Tim Trivett, Vice Chair Mike Looney and Board Member Michelle Payne’s seats are all up for re-election in November.

No one has fulfilled their obligations to run on the ballot for school board, so any candidates will be write-ins. It is not mandatory to write-in candidates but space is always provided on the ballot for any position.

No members of the school board have publicly announced they will run again.
