Blues Fest at High Tides brings thousands to the beach

Several thousand blues fans enjoyed a rocking weekend featuring the legendary Bobby Messano, The Nighthawks and more than a dozen other blues performers in a three-day concert at High Tides on the Potomac.

The Blues Fest was sponsored by The Colonial Beach Blues Society, The NSWC Federal Credit Union, the restaurant and others to support autism research.  Fans came from as far away as Florida, by car and by boat, to enjoy the music.

Other sponsors were the Tides Inn and Tides Market, Brutarian Music & Magazine, the Colonial Beach Chamber of Commerce and Populuxe.  More than a dozen vendors bought spaces along the boardwalk to support autism research and the event.

Performing Friday were the Andy Poxon Band, the Moonshine Society and Anthony “Swampdog” Clark.  Sunday’s performers included the Blues Flash, Piedmont Blues Plus, Scott Ramminger and his Crawstickers, Michael Tash & Bad Influence, and the Nighthawks.

Saturday’s cool performances featured the popular Bobby Messano, the Big Money Band, Retro Deluxe, Franc Robert, Jumpin’ Jupiter, the Night Kings, Carhy Ponton King and the fabulous illusions by Vick.  The three days of music were believed by event organizers to have drawn more visitors to the beach than the Riverfest and Jet Ski weekends combined.

Blues, the guitar-based Memphis-born music style that features soulful vocals, is noted for the devotion of its fans. The Colonial Beach event gave those supporters a chance to see both legendary performers and highly skilled but relatively unknown acts in a beach setting while raising money for a good cause.
