Baker pleads ‘No Contest’ to brutal Beach Gate murder

A Maryland man has entered a plea of no contest to a charge of First Degree Murder in connection to the brutal slaying of a woman at the Beach Gate Motel in Colonial Beach on Oct. 3, 2012.

Elizabeth “Niecey” Thompson was beaten, stabbed 46 times and left lying in her nightgown in a pool of blood in the motel parking lot. Pleading no contest to the crime was William Baker, 49, of Indian Head, Md.,

Thompson’s former boyfriend.

Westmoreland County Commonwealth’s Attorney Julia Sichol said that by entering the no contest plea, Baker was admitting the State has enough evidence to convict him. Baker will be back in Westmoreland County Circuit Court on Sept. 20 for sentencing.

“Mr. Baker is now facing a potential life sentence in jail,” said Sichol. “Although nothing the criminal justice system can do will ever make up for the loss Ms. Thompson’s family has suffered, I am pleased with the outcome of the hearing on Thursday, and will do my best to make sure Mr. Baker remains in jail and away from society for the rest of his life.”

Sichol said witness Samuel Muse was with Thompson in a room of the motel when Baker called and threatened to kill her. According to Muse, Baker arrived at the motel a short time later and chased Thompson out to the parking lot where he started beating and stabbing her.

Other witnesses from the motel said Muse tackled Baker in an attempt to help her, but Baker continued his assault, repeatedly stabbing Thompson. She died of massive wounds before the police and the Colonial Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad could arrive at the motel to assist her.

Authorities said Baker used a large kitchen knife in the assault. The knife was recovered by police. Investigators found Baker’s DNA at the scene, and found Thompson’s DNA on Baker’s shirt.

After attacking Thompson, Baker fled the scene and was the object of an intense search by the Colonial Beach Police Department, the Westmoreland Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police. Sheriff’s Officers found Baker about five hours later walking along Route 205.

Baker is being held at the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, pending the completion of a pre-sentencing report and his next appearance in court.  As a result of this incident, and others, the Beach Gate Motel has been closed by authorities.
