Two Maryland cars won top honors at the 34th Annual Rod Run to the Beach in a competition held last weekend, despite cloudy skies and occasional rain, as a part of the event sponsored by the Colonial Beach Education Foundation.
Best in Show for the popular Colonial Beach event, which draws thousands of visitors each year, was a 1973 Chevy Camaro owned by Norman L. Bowie of Nanjemoy, MD. The Founders’ Choice Award went to a 1934 Chevy Sedan owned by Rita and Danny Buckmaster of Prince Frederick, MD.
“The 34th Rod Run to the Beach was a tremendous success, all due to the cooperation of our town’s support and the many donations of prizes,” Al Young, the president of the Educational Foundation said.
“There were 127 registered vehicles, some from as far away as New York. Attendance was great. The vendors did a wonderful job, also helping everyone enjoy the day. Sunday’s events were shortened due to inclement weather, but the Education Foundation members want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting our goal to award graduating Colonial Beach High School seniors with well-earned scholarships,” Young said.
Young’s brother, Steve Young, was one of the founders of the Colonial Rod Club and also started The Rod Run to the Beach 34 years ago. “The Colonial Beach Education Foundation was originally formed by Dr. Don Warner, Superintendent of Colonial Beach Schools, when the money was raised to build a new high school,” Young said. “It was then disbanded, and when Dr. Alice Howard was Superintendent, she started the Colonial Beach Education Foundation back up.”
When Steve Young became ill, Steve and his wife, Linda, asked the Colonial Beach Educational Foundation to take over the Rod Run. Sadly, Steve Young passed away two years ago, but Al Young and Linda Young have worked with many other community leaders and volunteers to keep Steve’s dream alive.
