SB discusses options for CBMS students

Colonial Beach Middle School students need a new place to study. Damage to the middle school building, resulting from years of neglected maintenance and facilitated by the recent storms, warrant the removal of students as soon as possible.

“What’s looming, what’s been mentioned, is that we need a new school!” Superintendent Donna Power informed Tim Trivett, Colonial Beach School Board chairman, and board members Mike Looney and Vicki Roberson at a special School

CB School Board looks at repair options

School Superintendent Donna Power has been charged by the School Board to provide detailed information at the October School Board meeting on the costs both to repair or replace the middle school building and the elementary school building, both of which were damaged in the recent earthquake and hurricane.  Power is gathering costs for building a new school and cafeteria, repairing the damage to the existing elementary and middle

SB addresses mixed AYP results in CB

August is “always the beginning,” according to School Superintendent Donna Power.  It is the traditional time to wrap up teacher and student class assignments, acclimate new personnel and put into action a plan for the new school year.  The theme for the 2011-2012 school year is “Facing the Future Together – On To Excellence.”

Power was proud to announce at the Aug. 17 Colonial Beach School Board meeting that the elementary school made Adequate Yearly Progress or AYP for the 2010-2011

Budget mistake may provide extra $1.6M to schools

On Thursday, June 30, within hours of a state-mandated budget deadline, the Colonial Beach School Board unanimously passed its 2011-2012 budget in the amount of $8,652,403, relying on Ordinance No. 605, passed by the Colonial Beach Town Council on Wednesday, June 29.

That amount is $1.6 million more than what Town Council meant to approve as the total local school funding.  However, an error in the formula used to calculate revenue totals appears in the second page of Ordinance No. 605.

A careful reading of Ordinance No. 605 shows the local transfer to the schools of $1,608,496 appears twice in the calculations.  First, the local transfer is shown on the ordinance as the total amount of the local school transfer.  Then the same amount, $1.6 million, is added to the

Colonial Beach schools set to cut teaching positions

Despite a last ditch effort by council members Gary Seeber and Mike Ham to modify the proposed 2011-2012 town budget to add $149,000 in projected revenues, which would have provided level funding to town schools, Colonial Beach Town Council voted 4-3 against the proposed budget modification.

According to Ham, personal property tax revenues had been under estimated by $51,000 in the proposed budget. An additional $98,000 returned by the school to the town in 2010-2011 could be returned back to the school system. By modifying the proposed budget to include the additional $149,000 and modifying the school transfer, two teacher positions and seven teaching assistant positions would not be on the cutting block.

Seeber urged council to pass the modified budget saying “The school has to do contracts tomorrow. They're going to have to let people go.”

Council members Sparky Ridgely, Karen Payne, Burkett Lyburn and Mayor Fred Rummage all
