Thompson's son holds her photo.

As  Elizabeth D. Thompson struggled with her attacker in the early morning hours of Oct. 3, she made a desperate call to  911. According to Westmoreland County Sheriff C. O. Balderson, “Westmoreland dispatch received a 911 cell phone call, at 1:13 a.m. on October 3, 2012 from the victim herself saying she was being stabbed and it was in progress.”

Immediately, Westmoreland dispatched deputies, Eric Molinares and  Charles Bowles.

According to a press release by Colonial Beach Police Chief Kenneth Blevins Sr. On Oct. 3 at approximately 1 a.m. while on patrol in the 800 block of Colonial Avenue, Sgt. M.A Russo observed activity in the parking lot of The Beach Gate Motel.

As Russo entered the parking lot to investigate the activity he was approached by several subjects reporting that a woman had been stabbed.
The victim lay on the ground in the parking lot in a pool of blood about 30 feet from her hotel room.

Move Over Dumbo

Diane Christopher is shown here with her spectacular “Elephant-Ear” (Colocasia) plants in front of her home on Bancroft Ave. in Colonial Beach. She planted the bulbs originally in the spring 2011. That first year they didn’t grow to be this large. Each winter the foliage is supposed to be cut back and the bulbs dug up and brought inside for the winter, however Christopher decided to simply cover the bulbs with a heavy layer of mulch and try her luck.  As you can see, when spring came around the plants grew even larger than expected. People walking and driving by their home frequently stop by to comment on the size and beauty of the plants. To give you some perspective on just how large these plants are, Diane Christopher is 5’2” tall. We can’t wait to see how big these plants get next year!

Robinson arrested

Michael Robinson, 50, of Colonial Beach was arrested Wednesday morning at home without incident and charged with 3 counts of petty larceny and 3 counts of embezzlement.

The Westmoreland Sheriff’s Office was notified by Robinson's employer at the 7-Eleven in Colonial Beach that one of its employees might be stealing money, according to Sheriff C. O. Balderson.

Detective William Lewko and Lieutenant Anthony Darby were dispatched toto the scene. After a brief investigation Robinson was taken into custody and released on his own recognizance.

The alleged occurrences were reported to have happened between July 22 and 3, 2012. Robinson will have his first court appearance in Westmoreland General District Court on Aug. 28.

The incident is still under investigation and further charges are pending.

A legal notice appeared in the Free Lance-Star on Monday August 20, set to run for four consecutive weeks noting a foreclosure on property at 301 Beach Terrace in Colonial Beach. This address is the property on the Virginia site of the Riverboat. The deed of trust is in the name of Flanagan’s of Colonial Beach. The sale is to take place on Sept. 13, at 10:45 a.m. on the site of the property.
Bidders are required to have a $50,000 deposit or 10% of the sales price at the time of the foreclosure.
