Worrell: Guilty

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 17, at Westmoreland Circuit Court, before Judge Joseph J. Ellis, Barbara Marks Worrell pled guilty to 13 felony counts of embezzlement and one felony count of making false statements on income tax returns.  The embezzlement charges allege that Worrell, former finance director for Colonial Beach schools, stole at least $337,000 from September 1997 through April 2009.
Mark Gardner, Worrell’s attorney, argued that Worrell be allowed to continue to remain out on bond citing she had been cooperative, was not a flight risk, was not a threat to the community, and further noting that her husband has health problems and her home is currently subject to foreclosure proceedings.  Commonwealth’s Attorney Dean Atkins advised Judge Ellis “I will not object to his motion for release.”

Steps to revitalize a town in decline

Colonial Beach found its economic niche in the early 1900s when steamships would deliver tourists to its scenic river shoreline.  Hotels, amusement centers and restaurants flourished driven by money spent by urban tourists seeking time away from the metropolitan DC area and fun times on the water with family and friends.

Westmoreland drug raid nets seven arrests

On Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, seven Westmoreland County residents were arrested during simultaneous drug raids throughout the county. Operation “Clean Sweep” began at 4 a.m. and ended with the seven being in custody of the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office without incident.

Except for one individual, those arrested had been indicted by the regional grand jury on felony and misdemeanor charges to include crack cocaine, marijuana and prescription drugs. As a result of the arrests and the execution of search warrants, drugs, paraphernalia and cash were seized.

The operation was conducted by members of the Tri-County Drug Task Force, which includes Sheriff Offices of Westmoreland, King George and Caroline counties, Colonial Beach Police Department, Virginia State Police, FBI and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Northern Neck Regional Jail officers and a helicopter from the Virginia National Guard Aviation Unit also participated in the raids.
