Mayor gets wet at National Night Out

National Night Out began in 1984, to allow citizens and law enforcement to get together to help fight crime. Activities are designed to engage both young and old, educating the public on current laws and raising awareness on how law enforcement protects citizens.

School board member and retired Coach, Wayne Kennedy arrested

According to a press release by the Virginia State Police, the Journal has learned that Cletus W. Kennedy, 59, of the 200 block of Meadow Avenue, Colonial Beach, VA, was charged with two felony counts of Obtaining Money by False Pretense (18.2-178) and three felony counts of Trademark Infringement (59.1-92.12). Kennedy was arrested in Warsaw following a state police investigation at the Warsaw Flea Market. Kennedy was arraigned in Richmond County General District Court, August 2, 2013.

Bland and Purce turn themselves in to Westmorleand County Sheriff's Office

The Westmoreland County Sheriff's Office obtained indictments for both Kevin J. Bland, Jr. (AKA KJ) and Torrence C. Purce, Jr. (AKA TP), both of Jackson St. in Colonial Beach as part of Operation 096.

According the Westmoreland County Sheriff, C.O. Balderson, the two men turned themselves in on Aug. 2 shortly after the Sheriff's Office posted the suspect's pictures on their social media page.

Bland, 20 years old, came in early Friday morning allowing him to have his first court appearance that day in Westmoreland Circuit Court. Bland is currently being held at the Northern Neck Regional Jail (NNRJ) without bond.

Bland is charged with one count distribution of a controlled substance, namely crack cocaine. He is also being held on a federal detainer for probation violation on drug related charges.

Purce, also 20 years old, turned himself in later in the day on Friday Aug. 2. He has been indicted on five counts. Two for distribution of a controlled substance, two for distribution of a controlled substance in a school zone and one count of conspiring to distribute a controlled substance, namely crack cocaine.

Purce is being held at NNRJ on no bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday Aug. 6 in Westmoreland General District Court.

Suspect in at least nine break-ins apprehended

Desmond L. Lee

Desmond L. Lee has been charged in connection with several break-ins in the Glebe Harbor/Cabin Point area and Mount Holly. Nine counts of breaking and entering, five charges of grand larceny and one charge of petty larceny have all been filed against him.

Reports of break-ins between June 1 16 came into the Westmoreland Sheriff's Office. After investigations were conducted Sheriff C. O. Balderson said the Sheriff's Office has a suspect (Lee) in custody and he is being held without bond at the Northern Neck Regional Jail.

Lee was arrested on July 31 and will have his first court appearance on Aug. 6 in the Westmoreland General District Court.

Among Lee’s charges for breaking and entering, six are for Glebe Harbor/Cabin Point, two for the 3000 block of Skipjack Road in Kinsale and one for a break-in on the 1500 block of Mount Holly Rd.

Sheriff C. O. Balderson said the investigation continues with other charges pending. Balderson asks that any residents with more information concerning these crimes, or anyone who has been a victim and has not reported it, please call the Detective Jay Michell at (804) 493-8066.
