Pre-K program slated for Board approval tonight.

At the June 3rd work session,  School Board members looked over the Colonial Beach public schools Comprehensive Plan for Coordinated Services, presented by teacher Audrey Berryman.
One new program that is being introduced and aggressively pursued is the pre-K program for students who will be 4 years old by September 30th.  Berryman told the Board last week that teachers, parents, and students are elated with the prospect.
This program differs from the current Head Start Program (which allows 3 year olds) in its criteria for selection and age group. The Pre-K program under Title I will focus on students with specific needs relating to adjusting to a school environment and various social interaction skills, as well as academic criteria.

Some 4 year-olds in Head Start may qualify for this program leaving more slots open for the Head Start program.
Head Start, which currently enrolls 18 students, is based on economic factors while the Pre-K does not look at income so tuition students will be eligible for the new Pre-K Title I program.
To get ready for the project Colonial Beach Schools have already  gained DOE (Department of Education) preliminary approval, consulted with the Hunter Barnes, (an Architectural Consultant), and Cheryl Strobel, an early childhood specialist.
The school has also posted an RFP (request for proposal) to purchase manufacturing services for a turn-key modular building to serve as a Pre-Kindergarten classroom and Title I offices space. The office space will later be converted to a second classroom if enrollment warrants it. The anticipated completion will be July 31st 2009 to open in September for the 1009-2010 school year.
The new building, its construction and possibly the site survey will be funded in whole with Federal Funds under Title I grant money.
However the removal of the storage shed, which sits on the far west side of the school property where the new building will sit, must be removed and may not be covered by the grant.
The Board tossed around ideas of how to remove this building using volunteers.
The Board also looked at other considerations such as ability to provide meals as well as future expenses that will be required by local School funds. The Board will decide whether or not to approve the program at the Regular Meeting on Wednesday June 10th.
Pre K-screening and registration was completed on Saturday, June 6, 2009 and the school is still accepting applicants.  If you are interested in enrolling your child and want to know more you may contact Mrs. Sue Borders at 804-224-2727 to set up an appointment to have your child screened.
