Lawrence right-of-way sale approved

For the third consecutive month, Colonial Beach Town Council voted on a resolution to approve the abandonment of a town-owned right-of-way on Lawrence Lane.  Resolution 21-11 passed unanimously by way of a roll call vote.  The resolution further instructs the town manager and town attorney to proceed with the appraisal and other requirements for the sale of the property.

Council members Karen Payne, Sparky Ridgely, Burkett Lyburn, Shane Buzby and Mike Ham all reported that they

recently walked the property in question.

“I walked through several times and talked to several homeowners,” Buzby said.

Five citizens also appeared before council in favor of the sale with local resident Sherry Hutchins saying “It is a good idea to vacate property that is not being used.”

Also speaking during citizen input time was James Rankin, owner of the Colonial Beach Shopping Center and owner and founder of Rankin’s Hardware.

“We have seven vacant stores and we need to fill those stores,” Rankin told council. “I need the people of Colonial Beach to help.  We can make a good shopping area here in Colonial Beach.  The taxes are very expensive here. We have to have support to rent those units.”

Citizen Jay Jarvis spoke urging council to “prioritize projects in the Capital Improvement Plan.”

“For us to compete for federal funding, we’ve got to be able to show how each project benefits the town, the county and the district,” Jarvis said.

Council is scheduled to review the CIP at its June meeting.

Town Manager Val Foulds reported to council that submission of bids to perform emergency sewer repairs will close May 17.  Because the bids were still open at council’s May 12 meeting, necessary sewer rate increases for presentation to council have been delayed.

Council also unanimously approved Resolution 24-11 with one wording change.  Resolution 24-11 provides financial support in the amount of  $5,000 for the 2011 International Jet Ski competition to be held July 29, 30 and 31.

Resolution 25-11 passed unanimously ratifying the December contract between Colonial Beach Chamber of Commerce and Upstate Watercraft Promotions, Inc. to host the 2011 Jet Ski event.  Mayor Fred Rummage requested a resolution to ratify the December contract saying “We are committing the property of this town. This will set everyone’s mind at ease.”  Rummage further noted “I would like to see a special event every weekend.”

According to Ham, the one-half hour coverage show of the 2010 Jet Ski event held at Colonial Beach will air at 1 p.m. June 17 on local channel 8.
