Mike Ham appointed to serve on town council

Three applicants stepped up to the call for letters of interest to serve on town council, filling a vacancy left by the resignation of Steve Kennedy. At a special town council meeting on April 14, council allowed each candidate an opportunity to speak, then held a question and answer format.


Robert Busick, recently retired after a career in public and private finance, told council “The citizens have the passion to move the town forward” and vowed to “work collaboratively with all.”

Mike Ham, retired in 2008 after a 31-year career in public and private finance and as a resource manager for the Army Audit Agency overseeing a budget of $80 million per year and 700 employees. Ham told the council that one of the main problems in Colonial Beach is that “it's the best kept secret in Virginia” and noted “I want to do whatever I can to help the town.”

“Every dollar we bring in from the outside is one dollar less that comes from us,” Ham said.

 Sherry Hutchins, a teacher in King George County, told council, “I'm part of this community as an active member” and further noted “I am well organized. I don't procrastinate. I've always been picked as a leader.”

After going into closed session at the end of the regularly scheduled council meeting, council deliberated for 15 minutes before returning in open session. Council member and Vice Mayor Burkett Lyburn made a motion to appoint Mike Ham, which was seconded by council member Karen Payne. By a unanimous voice vote, council appointed Mike Ham to fill the vacant council seat.
