Buzby resigns from council

Councilman Shane Buzby makes the fourth resignation from Colonial Beach Town Council in less than a year.

Councilman, Stephen Kennedy resigned on March 23, 2011. Councilwoman Karen Payne’s resignation was accepted November 2011, and councilman Ronald ‘Sparky’ Ridgely’s resignation was added to the agenda at the December meeting.

Buzby announced his resignation in a letter dated Feb. 10, the same day he was signed in as a Deputy Sheriff with Westmoreland County Sheriffs Department.

In his letter Buzby said, “It has been a pleasure serving in this capacity and I thank all of the

citizens that supported me in this position.”

Buzby expressed his passion for law enforcement, saying he was recently presented with an opportunity to serve the community as a deputy sheriff and accepted.

Buzby announced his resignation was effective Feb 13. A special meeting has been called for Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Colonial Beach Town Center to accept the resignation of Council Member Shane Buzby.

The council has 30 days to advertise, interview and appoint a new member to fill the vacant seat. By law the appointee can not fill more than a 2 year term. The seat automatically becomes vacant for the next upcoming election.

Buzby’s replacement will make the third appointee on the Colonial Beach Council and will open a total of 5 seats at the next election. Seats held by: Buzby’s replacement, Tim Curtin who filled Payne’s vacant seat and Tommy Edwards who filled Ridgely’s vacant seat all become vacant at the November elections. Vice Mayor Burkett Lyburn’s term will expire this year and be up for re-election as well as Mayor Rummage’s term.

Neither Lyburn nor Rummage has publicly announced if they will run for re-election but Lyburn has hinted he may not.

Buzby will serve as Auxiliary
Buzby will be the second member of a new auxiliary program for the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Department. Buzby joins Melvin Johnson, a member of the police force in Dahlgren and a resident of Kinsale, the two will volunteer their time as deputy sheriffs for Westmoreland County.

They will be on call as well as be utilized at special events such as festivals and parades, assisting deputies on projects and operations as well.

Sheriff C.O. Balderson has been looking into the program since 2008, which has no funding avenues available. The department provides equipment for the volunteers but individuals pay for their own training, saving taxpayers money.

Balderson said he and the volunteers are very excited about the program and credits the two with being extremely dedicated to their community.

Balderson said that former Colonial Beach Police Chief, Christopher Hawkins, now a member of the Westmoreland Sheriff’s Department, was very instrumental in getting this program off the ground and the sheriff’s department hopes that others who are interested in being a part of the program or volunteering in other ways come forward.

Anyone interested in helping to serve their community in a volunteer capacity or who wishes to find out more about the programs offered are encouraged to call the Sheriffs office at (804) 493-8066.
