Outdoors Report - March 13, 2013

We begin our outdoor report this year with just a little bit of information for you. We know with warmer weather and longer days we will get more fishing reports. Please feel free to email us reports or pictures of your fish or animals you harvest. Keep them appropriate. Remove excess blood, keep your shirts on, etc.
If you submit a report please keep it truth in location and size of the fish. I have NO INTENTION of giving away your fishing spot. That being said, just tell me in general where you caught the fish, what you used to catch it and what time of day or other conditions that were important. I don’t need to know the exact spot. For example: “I caught a limit of rockfish off a point below the Rt. 301 bridge on the Potomac is plenty.” I’d rather not overrun your spot with other anglers. Part of the fun in fishing is figuring some of it out on your own.

OVERVIEW
Cold snow and rain messed the rivers up. But things started to improve by Sunday.

The Rappahannock River was muddy all weekend. Prior to that anglers were taking catfish and perch from Hopyard up and down a few miles. Nightcrawlers were the bait of choice. Once the river comes back down to normal flow and clears some we will get some more fishing in.

Winter Harbor reported perch on cutbait and nightcrawlers in the tidal creeks off the Potomac River. They did not have any bloodworms as of press time.

Aqua Land reported good perch fishing using nightcrawlers too.

Lake Anna at Anna Point Marina and guide Chris Craft has been seeing nice crappie angling with jigs on pilings and deep docks. The crappie will soon be moving shallow.

Some bass are taking suspending jerkbaits or cranks and they are also taking shaky head jigs.

Don’t forget the Free Fishing Day at Old Cossey Pond for kids under 15 this Saturday. No adults can fish but the trout pond will be stocked just prior to the event. Fishing should be good! Use light action rods, flashy spinners and Trout Powerbait.

April 6 is the Youth Spring Gobbler Day. Youth 15 and younger can hunt that day and must carry the firearm. No adults may shoot or carry firearms. Take a youth hunting and send us a picture of your success!
April 13 is the opening day of spring gobbler season,  half hour before sunrise until noon.
