Outdoors Report -July 31, 2013

Mark and Missy Fike

Fishing is in the summer slump in some areas, although diehard anglers are making a good run of it.

Rappahannock River
Fishing in the river improved slightly by last weekend. Bass anglers find fish at creek mouths on plastics and along drop offs. Work baits slowly. Perch and bream can be found on brush piles. Catfish continue to bite on a variety of baits. There was a rumor of croaker just south of Port Royal. We only had one report of that, so we are not sure.

Potomac River
Ken’s Tackle in Spotsylvania reported a 48 pound catfish from the river. They also reported nice stripers caught off the lumps along the Maryland side. Other reports corroborate that with nice fish caught on RatLTraps, bucktails and jigs with sassy shads on them. Use your finder to locate fish on the structure, motor uptide and then drift over jigging.
Winter Harbor is reporting three really nice catfish that were very close to citation size being brought in. They also are seeing some nice croaker caught from below Colonial Beach. Squid and shrimp are the baits of choice.
Aqua Land reported that the croaker, perch and rockfish are hitting. They are not sure what they are being caught on, but they are steadily selling squid and bloodworms to those that are catching fish.
Crabbing got slightly better last week and then dropped off again this weekend. As a result, crabs are in high demand and prices reflect that.
Ruffins Pond gave up some snakeheads this past week according to Ken’s Tackle.

Saltwater
The middle bay area is now seeing some decent spot action, some croaker action, and some good striper action with live spot and trolling sassy shads. No word on bluefish or Spanish. It has been a weird year for bluefish and Spanish. They are few and far between anywhere in the bay for some reason. The flounder bite has been very slow and the fish that are caught appear to be small. Crabs are coming on a bit stronger, but overall the crabbing is still slow. At the oceanfront the crabbing is very good.
