Despite the heat the fishing continues to be good. Check river levels before going out due to rain.
Catfish are hitting nightcrawlers and cutbait up and down the river. Fish are decent sized. The larger fish are hitting cutbait. Upriver the bream and smallmouth are hitting very well. Small spinners, jigs or plastics are taking fish in deeper pools and riffles.
Aqualand (301-259-0572) is telling us that fishing is very good. Catfish, croaker, perch and rockfish are being caught right off the beach.
Small croaker are definitely in the area. The fish are readily biting squid and shrimp. Fish in low light conditions for best action. The area of the river from Colonial Beach to Dahlgren was quite good on July 4.
Mott’s Run Reservoir (540-786-8989) not many anglers went out but those that did caught plenty of smaller to average size bass and average size catfish. The bass are deep and anglers are having to get their baits down to them. Catfish are hitting chicken liver.
Ponds are still giving up decent bass and bream. Fish slower in a summer pattern.
We have heard very little about saltwater this week. Last reports we had were that triggerfish, spadefish, sheepsheads were all hitting well on structure such as the CBBT. Spanish were hitting at Virginia Beach and cobia were biting well in chum slicks.
