Outdoors Report - April 30, 2014

Fishing is very good now, and some saltwater action is picking up, too.

Hunting
Turkey hunting ramped up this week with plenty of birds seen and a number of them taken home to eat, as well. Send us decent photos of youth or new hunters with birds, and we will print as space permits- This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

VDGIF and local kids sample pond’s fish population

On April 21, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries’ (VDGIF) biologists met with Mark Fike and Matt Limbrick, leaders of the King George Outdoor Club, along with a few of the members and other youth in the county to learn how fisheries’ biologists sample a waterway for fish populations.

Opening day is a big hit with the gobblers!

“Opening day was good to me and James Bub Jackson of Powershot Production (www.pshunting.com) with a double. We had lots of gobbling. There were plenty of turkeys, so we are going to have to slow down and hunt more patiently.”

Outdoors Report - April 23, 2014

Fishing continues to be quite good in our area; many species are nearing the top of their activity, except for saltwater. Warmer water will turn those fish on very soon.

Going Outdoors? Beware of the Ticks!

Anyone who ventures outdoors, or anyone who lives with someone that does should read this article. It is getting warm out there, and ticks are definitely out and about. My wife and I went turkey hunting for a few hours this past Saturday, and when we came home, she found five ticks on her.

Outdoors Report - April 16, 2014

Fishing is quite good for all freshwater species now.

Hunting
Hunters are not hearing a lot of gobbling, but the birds are strutting in fields. They should start gobbling more when the hens begin sitting on nests more. Send us any decent photos of youth with birds, and we will print as space permits. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Fishing
Rappahannock River – Ken’s Tackle Shop in Spotsylvania reported white perch and hickory shad caught at the Fredericksburg City Dock. Hickory shad and American shad are being caught upstream of Falmouth. Stripers are also still being caught as they run upstream to spawn. Bass are still being caught in the river, although our reports are fewer this week. A few catfish are biting in the river.
Potomac River – There have been plenty of catfish caught in the river. Some anglers are reporting striper upriver, too; they are spawning.  Some anecdotal reports tell of a few white perch in creeks. We are also hearing of bass now being caught in the tribs of the river. Use plastics and jigs to catch the fish on woody structures.
Ponds – Crappie are hitting quite well on jigs and minnows. Bass are spawn and pre-spawn this week, depending on the water temperatures.
Old Cossey Pond was still great for trout. Super Dupers and Magnum worms, meal worms and red wigglers were good baits.
Motts Run is now open. They report good crappie action off the piers this past week.
Lake Anna – The crappie bite is VERY good in grassy areas as the fish are spawning. Use jigs or minnows. Try uplake.
