Outdoors Report - March 27, 2013

The weather certainly has a damper on angling for many people, but on warm days the fish seem to be biting.

The Rappahannock River was clear  but with the rain and snow on Sunday and Monday it will be muddy by mid to late week. Hopefully it will clear before Easter. However, Ken’s Tackle in Fredericksburg reported catfish up to 10 pounds at the City Dock. There were white perch at Hicks and Little Falls too. Remember that a herring moratorium (NO TAKING HERRING) is in place. Once the river goes down things will pick up.

Fishing to look forward to this month

This cold spell has been quite frustrating to say the least. About the time we get a somewhat warm day, the weather turns sour again. However, rest assured that the fish will start to bite more consistently.

Meanwhile, look for shad and herring (no take on herring) to arrive in Fredericksburg in the next two weeks. The peak will likely occur mid April. Small spoons, jigs with bright colors and even darts will take fish.

Snagged a Sunfish

Ashley Sanders of King George found that the sunfish were interested in worms on Saturday. Her dad, Gary Sanders, successfully landed a bass with a white spinnerbait. Visit here for a story and photos from the free kids’ Trout Day at Cossey Pond, held Saturday.

Annual kids free fishing Trout Day at Cossey Pond draws 60+

Despite the rain and cool temperatures, 60-plus kids turned out to fish in Old Cossey Pond in Fredericksburg on Saturday. VDGIF stocked the pond with rainbow, brown and a few golden trout the night before, and the pond was closed until the kids were able to send Berkley Trout Powerbait into the water from the perimeter banks on Saturday morning. Outdoors Report - March 20, 2013

Overview— Cold rain messed the rivers up again and angler participation was minimal. However, the crowds in local fishing aisles at stores picked up. Anglers are just waiting for warm weather to sneak out and toss in a line.
