Election Day: Do you know who’s on your ballot for local offices?

Correction: We did not mean to leave Renee Parker out of the list of candidates for the James Madison district. The information was in the story originally submitted by Phyllis Cook but it did not appear in the final version. It was an error in production, not an oversight by Phyllis Cook. We apologize to Renee Parker for the error.

There’s an election next Tuesday, Nov. 8.
You’ve seen the signs along the roads. We’ve published candidate profiles.
Now candidates for local offices in King George are in the midst of the final week of campaigning prior to the election set for Nov. 8.
But do you know who is running in your election district? See below to verify candidates you will see on your ballot for local offices in King George along with any current news affecting their candidacies.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS CANDIDATES
~ JAMES MADISON     Incumbent Joseph W. Grzeika is running for reelection. This week Grzeika received two important endorsements. U.S. Congressman Rob Wittman, representing the 1st Congressional District threw his support behind Grzeika. In addition, Virginia Senator Richard Stuart endorsed Grzeika over his opponent, saying, “Joe is a proven leader who does his homework and always provides a factual representation of the issue, he is one of the folks I rely on for local issues and I am pleased to endorse him.”
Grzeika also announced this week that he and his spouse, Anita, have a new grandson, Harrison, born last week. The latest birth brings Grzeika’s grandchildren to five.
S. Renee Parker is challenging Grzeika for the seat. Parker is finishing up a single term on the county School Board.

~DAHLGREN      Ruby A. Brabo and Robert Rhoten are candidates for the Dahlgren seat. Rhoten has had three known addresses during his two years living in the county. He failed to mention his three marriages when asked by The Journal if he was single, married, widowed or divorced, but last week admitted them to our editor, adding that the first marriage was annulled and that he is currently single.
He was recently asked by our colleague, Cathy Dyson, at the Free Lance-Star, “Have you ever been convicted of a crime? If yes, provide details.” To which Rhoten responded, “No felonies.”
But to our reporter Doug Davant, Rhoten admitted last week to a conviction for a misdemeanor assault in Florida, with online records indicating it took place in August 2003, for which he served a day in jail and six months probation.
~ AT-LARGE      Incumbent Dale W. Sisson, Jr. is running unopposed for the at-large seat.

SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES
AT-LARGE—John Davis, Rachelle R. Matney, Anthony “Tony” Scaramozzi are candidates for the at-large seat on the School Board. Davis previously served on the county School Board from 2000 through 2007. Scaramozzi is a member of the Planning Commission.
JAMES MADISON—Raymond E. “Ray” Duncan and Kristin Tolliver are both running for the School Board slot in James Madison.
DAHLGREN—Ken Novell is running unopposed for the Dahlgren School Board seat. He is a long-time member of the county’s Recreation Advisory board.

CONSTITUTIONAL OFFICES
Incumbent Matthew J. “Matt” Britton is running unopposed for Commonwealth’s Attorney.
Incumbent Alice L. Moore is running unopposed for Treasurer.
Jo Ann Hall Ando is running unopposed Commissioner of Revenue.
Current Sheriff Steve F. Dempsey is on the ballot.  Freddie L. “Fred” Hottle is a former Sheriff’s Deputy, who is also running for the office.

TRI-COUNTY/CITY SOIL & WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT DIRECTORS
Incumbent Janet Gayle Harris is running unopposed for one of two open director positions for the Tri-County/City Soil & Water Conservation District. Tri-County/City SWCD serves King George, Spotsylvania, Stafford and Fredericksburg to provide natural resource conservation management assistance to citizens and local governments.

ABSENTEE VOTING IN PERSON – NOW
If you’ve decided on who you’ll vote for and are eligible to vote absentee, you can do so now at the Registrar’s office in King George. Saturday, Nov. 5, is the last day for in-person absentee voting.
Registrar Lorrie Gump and her staff are busy assisting voters to cast ballots for the Nov. 8 election to vote absentee in advance of Election Day. There are numerous reasons that make voters eligible to vote absentee. Absentee voting is an effective choice for those who expect to be out of the county on Election Day, whether on travel, those who have long commutes, or with unpredictable work hours.
Absentee voting can be done in one of two ways, either by mail or in-person at the Registrar’s office. The simplest way to vote absentee in advance of the election is to go to the King George Registrar’s office. There you may fill out an application for absentee voting and vote then and there on the spot. Any King George voter with a question about whether they qualify to vote absentee should contact the Registrar’s office, 775-9186.

The Registrar’s office is located on the ground floor of the Revercomb Building, behind the King George Courthouse on Route 3 (Kings Hwy). The Registrar’s office is open on week days from 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
