Deputy killed in Fatal Car Crash

The first woman deputy to serve on the King George County Sheriff’s Department force was killed last Sunday in a fatal car crash.  Sharon B. Zwicker, 54, of 11217 Pine Hill Rd. was declared dead at the accident scene after her 2000 Saturn station wagon collided with a 2005 Nissan Altima at the intersection of U.S. Hwy 301 and Route 623 in King George.

According to King George Sheriff Steve Dempsey, Zwicker was a master deputy and a school resource officer.

“She helped run our DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) and affected the lives of so many of our children...she influenced the lives of a lot of students about law enforcement and was really well thought of in the school system,” Dempsey said.

The sheriff also said that there would be traditional law enforcement honors rendered at Zwicker’s funeral.  Arrangement plans for that funeral are still under way.

Zwicker had been with the county’s sheriff’s department for more than 20 years.  She was retired to a part-time position with the sheriff’s office when the accident occurred.

Parents of King George students probably best remember Zwicker during the King George Middle School sessions as she often directed traffic in and out of the school.

Zwicker, the mother of two grown children, was married to Morgan Zwicker the owner of Pine Hill Towing service.

According to Virginia State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar, public affairs spokesman for the VSP, at 2:48 p.m. on Aug. 19 state troopers responded to the accident in which it was determined that Zwicker’s 2000 Saturn station wagon failed to yield the right-of-way at a stop sign and was struck by the driver of a 2005 Nissan Altima.  The impact caused the Saturn to overturn before coming to rest.

The Saturn was traveling westbound on Route 623 and the Nissan was traveling northbound on Route 301 at the time of the crash, Molnar’s press release reported.

The female driver, April C. Hall, 19, of Chaptico, Md., and a male passenger, Collin E. Brooks, 21, of Mechanicsville, Md., in the Nissan both suffered minor injuries and were assessed at the scene by emergency medical technicians.  The left lanes of both north and southbound US 301 were closed to allow for the investigation.  The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the King George County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the on-going crash investigation.

The service will be Thursday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m.

Funeral Arrangements

A visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at Tabernacle Baptist Church in King George. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at the church with Pastor Robert Warnick officiating. Interment will be in Historyland Memorial Park, King George, with sheriff’s office honors.
