KG Farmers Market Family Fun Day

What a happy day on Saturday! Our Family Fun Day brought more people into the market than ever before!
With cheerful greeters giving a warm welcome to all market visitors, hot coffee at the Wheeler’s stand for a donation, free music and drama, door prize and Basket Walk giveaways, pumpkins, corn shocks, fresh-baked bread and other goodies, and tons of beautiful fresh produce, there was something for everyone to enjoy!
Special thanks to Dave Derieux who, as Johnny Appleseed, passed out hundreds of free apples (compliments of Slater’s Farm) to visitors in honor of John Chapman’s 235th birthday!

And what a feast for my senses it was! My eyes smiled at the sight of so many children delightedly playing (and playing … and playing …) in our Kiddie Corn Pool. My ears, my voice and my heart happily sang along with the early morning Market Jammers playing fiddle tunes and singing old songs like “You are My Sunshine.” My nose breathed in deeply the smell of fresh, hot popcorn made by KG Parks & Rec. My mouth finally got to taste a barbecue and coleslaw lunch (yum!) before the Ruritans sold out — again! My skin appreciated the warmth of my fresh-off-the-press King George Farmers Market T-shirt, pulled over my regular outfit against the chilly, early autumn air.
Many thanks are due to everyone who helped make our Family Fun Day such a wonderful success: KG Market Jammers; Ben Miller, Family Drum Circle leader; Heritage Arts 4H, drama and dance; Xorissa Ravitz, creator of fabulous market T-shirts; Mike Church and his honey bees; Julie Moore, Potter; KG Ruritan Club; KG Bees Quilters; KG Parks and Recreation; KG Master Gardeners; Stan Mitchell and KGHS FFA Club; Larry Carr, Aubrey Mitchell, and all the Tractor Men; Market Set-up Volunteers: David Gaske, Esther Morgan, Bernie and Nathaniel Ulfers; Market Greeters: Cynthia Feeback, Elizabeth Hohman, Lisa Biever and Eileen Mercado.
Thanks, too, to our wonderful Farmers Market growers and vendors, 16 of whom were on site for the festivities, and to all of our many, many visitors!
Our market will continue through the month of October and into November. Join us every week this fall for fresh greens, turnips, apples, beans, squash, broccoli, cabbage and more! Enjoy the tastes of autumn as we enter a new season of eating locally!
As always, I look forward to seeing you all at the market real soon!
