High school, 4-H receive Battelle grants

Battelle Memorial Institute, an Ohio-based nonprofit research-and-development laboratory, is pleased to award a $5,000 grant to support mathematics, science, and the CyberPatriot Club at King George High School and $2,200 to two King George 4-H Clubs who compete in FIRST ® (Foundation for Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League competitions. The grant applications were sponsored by the Battelle – Dahlgren Office.

Specifically, the grant will enable the King George High School’s science department to purchase probe and sensor equipment. Such specialized equipment will afford students greater hands-on experience and will allow teachers the opportunity to plan learning activities that connect mathematics and science. Funding will also be used to purchase gel electrophoresis kits to practice DNA fingerprinting, a process used in forensic and biologic laboratories worldwide. The grant will also benefit the KGHS CyberPatriot club, which competes to test their cyber-security knowledge and skills by analyzing and repairing computer’ security weaknesses. For the 4-H Clubs, Dahlgren LEGO Engineers and King George Techno Dragons, the funds will be used for competition registration, to purchase competition kits and robot sensors. Battelle has sponsored these teams in the past, and their continued support will allow all three teams to compete at regional and state LEGO League competitions for the 2013 season. Each team is made up of 6-10 youth ages 9-14 who work together to solve real-world problems through design and development of a robot, completion of a research project, teamwork and a presentation of their solution. This year the competition focuses on “Nature’s Fury”, and teams will explore the awe-inspiring storms, quakes, waves and more that we call natural disasters.
