High school, 4-H receive Battelle grants

Battelle Memorial Institute, an Ohio-based nonprofit research-and-development laboratory, is pleased to award a $5,000 grant to support mathematics, science, and the CyberPatriot Club at King George High School and $2,200 to two King George 4-H Clubs who compete in FIRST ® (Foundation for Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League competitions. The grant applications were sponsored by the Battelle – Dahlgren Office.

Specifically, the grant will enable the King George High School’s science department to purchase probe and sensor equipment. Such specialized equipment will afford students greater hands-on experience and will allow teachers the opportunity to plan learning activities that connect mathematics and science. Funding will also be used to purchase gel electrophoresis kits to practice DNA fingerprinting, a process used in forensic and biologic laboratories worldwide. The grant will also benefit the KGHS CyberPatriot club, which competes to test their cyber-security knowledge and skills by analyzing and repairing computer’ security weaknesses. For more information about the King George STEM program contact Ms. Kristine Hill, Coordinator of Curriculum and Instruction for King George County Schools. For the 4-H Clubs, Dahlgren LEGO Engineers and King George Techno Dragons, the funds will be used for competition registration, to purchase competition kits and robot sensors. Battelle has sponsored these teams in the past, and their continued support will allow all three teams to compete at regional and state LEGO League competitions for the 2013 season. Each team is made up of 6-10 youth ages 9-14 who work together to solve real-world problems through design and development of a robot, completion of a research project, teamwork and a presentation of their solution. This year the competition focuses on “Nature’s Fury”, and teams will explore the awe-inspiring storms, quakes, waves and more that we call natural disasters. There are openings in both clubs, so if you are interested in finding out more, please call Terry Misch, 4-H Agent, at 775-3062 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Battelle Memorial Institute generously donates their time and money to improve and expand science and math programs which promote student engagement. As a not-for-profit trust, Battelle annually invests 20 percent or more of its net income in support of education. Improving education is one of Battelle’s founding purposes and operational signatures. As a business based on scientific discovery and application with an interest in promoting technological literacy, Battelle vigorously supports science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. Battelle also supports K-12 programs that encourage curiosity about STEM-based careers, professional development for science and math teachers, and programs that contribute to innovative education reform.
