Ballot set for local election this fall

Candidates whose names will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot this fall for local offices in King George are decided. The information is drawn from the certificates of candidate qualification and declaration of candidacy documents filed by those running and augmented by information from prior reporting on those who have run in King George previously. Their names are listed below.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS CANDIDATES
~ SHILOH      Incumbent Cedell Brooks, Jr. is running with two challengers also seeking the seat. Brooks will run for his seventh term on the Board of Supervisors for the Shiloh District.  He was first elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1991.

But he has two challengers this time around. Shawn L. Lawrence and Catherine “Cathy” Binder are both seeking to take over the seat.

Binder previously ran for a School Board seat in King George, losing to Lynn Pardee in a three-way At-Large race in 2007. Lawrence’s filing indicates that he was convicted of a felony and had his voting rights restored in 2007.

~ JAMES MONROE     Incumbent John P. LoBuglio is seeking a second term in the James Monroe seat on the Board of Supervisors. But he has a lot of competition, with three others also vying for the seat.  They are Richard A. “Rich” Lorey, James B. “Jim” Howard, and Jeffrey L. “Jeff” Bueche.

Lorey was nominated by the King George Republican Party, so did not have to obtain 125 signatures, as the rest running as Independents.

Howard had held the seat until LoBuglio won it four years ago, after three terms. Howard has a long history of public service, which also included his service on the School Board in the 1980s, after a previous term on the Board of Supervisors.

Bueche is new to King George politics and spouse of Ann Bueche, who is the school division’s Supervisor of Special Services.

SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES
~ SHILOH       Incumbent Michael E. Rose is running unopposed. Rose is finishing up his first term which he won as a write-in candidate four years when no other candidate appeared on the ballot for that slot.

~ JAMES MONROE     No one is on the ballot for School Board in the James Monroe district. But incumbent Rick Randall has announced that he intends to run a write-in campaign. He told The Journal he had gathered signatures, but discovered too late that many of them were outside his district, due to referring to an obsolete map of election districts. Randall is finishing up his first four-year term. So far, he is the only one who has publicly announced his intention to run as a write-in.

CONSTITUTIONAL OFFICES
Incumbent Keri A. Gusmann is running unopposed for Commonwealth’s Attorney in a special election for the remainder of an unexpired term. She was automatically elevated to become the current Commonwealth’s Attorney last September 2012, since she was then the Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney, when Matt Britton’s resignation became effective. Gusmann is running unopposed.
