DECA at King George High School (KGHS) showed off their marketing expertise – Thriving and Diving Deeper for DECA Gold at the State Leadership Conference in Virginia Beach, Virginia earlier this month, March 1-3. Fifty King George High School DECA Chapter members competed in 31 difference event areas. These outstanding students received the following awards:
On Friday night, March 1, at the Opening Awards Session, DECA at KGHS President Desmond Jordan was on stage to accept the Chapter’s Annual Report Blue Chip Award trophy with the highest possible points earned for the completed annual report for work done, activities completed, meetings/events held, etc. by the Chapter in the past twelve months. Kendall Powell and Mrs. Dee Strauss were recognized as the District 19 President and District 19 Advisor, respectively.
Also, King George DECA received a plaque for The School-Based Enterprise (SBE), Fox Stox Student Store, for achieving Gold Level Certification this year and will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California. The students who worked on the certification were Meghan Yanchulis and Kourtney Miller, with the assistance of their advisor Mrs. Dee Strauss. The school-based enterprise, Fox Stox, at King George High School has operated for 12 years and is to be commended for this first time achievement.
Finally on Friday, DECA at KGHS received a certificate of recognition for its participation in Virginia DECA Day activities.
On Saturday, the 50 KGHS students competed in their various events. Kendall Powell, Meghan Yanchulis, and Kourtney Miller also acted as the Chapter’s Voting Delegates, listened to campaign speeches and voted on who would be the DECA State Officer Team for next school year. Jackie Collins ran for Region 3 Vice President.
Saturday night’s award session brought King George to the stage again. Desmond Jordan was awarded the Charlie Craig DECA Foundation Scholarship and DECA Advisor Mrs. Dee Strauss, was awarded the Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award. Michael Hundley and Jackie Collins received medals in Advertising Campaign Event for their presentation. Gena Scheerschmidt received a medal in Hospitality & Tourism Professional Selling for her test. Jonah Bryant received a medal in Principles of Hospitality & Tourism Series Event for his role play. Bryson Howard received two medals in Automotive Services Marketing Series. Gabrielle Patterson received a medal in Human Resource Management Series Event for her role play. Meghan Yanchulis and Kourtney Miller received medals in the School Based Enterprise presentation.
Then on Sunday, the Grand Awards session began at 8:30 a.m. King George DECA was called to the stage repeatedly.

Finalists in Public Relations Project – Project Unify – Kristin Shea & Cartha Branham.
Finalist in Entrepreneurship Participating Event – Colton Southall.
Finalists in Entrepreneurship Written Event – Water World – Gabi Caron and Stephen Jenkins.
The following winners will be presenting at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC):
Finalist in Principles of Hospitality & Tourism – Jonah Bryant.
Finalist in Community Service Project – 5K for MDA – Anna Kniceley and Madison Mading. These students earned a spot at ICDC.
Finalists and Runners Up in Entrepreneurship Written Event – The Naked Dolphin – Samantha Fedak and Duncan Mollner. These students earned a spot at ICDC.
Finalists and Runners Up in Advertising Campaign – Carroll’s Automotive – Jackie Collins and Michael Hundley. These students earned a spot at ICDC.
Finalists and Runners Up in School Based Enterprise – Fox Stox – Meghan Yanchulis and Kourtney Miller. These students earned a spot at ICDC. (Colton Southall was invited to join in this presentation at ICDC.)
These overall Runners-Up winners, will be going to the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, Calif. to compete at the International Level April 23-28.
