Spotsylvania — An estimated 1,400 people gathered at Spotswood Baptist Church to pay their respects to King George Sheriff Steve Dempsey’s family Friday night.
The sheriff’s daughter and grand daughter, Bethany Dawn Dempsey, 37 and Lauren Allie White, 14, respectively were killed in a car crash in Millersville, Md. on Aug. 27.
Friends, local citizens, elected officials, and law enforcement and emergency personnel from throughout the region formed a line that wound from the sidewalk, through several rooms of the lobby, and finally around the perimeter inside the church.
While those in line waited more than three hours, the sheriff, his wife Charlene, and their immediate family stood for more than five hours.
Bethany Dempsey and her daughter Lauren White were traveling back to Warsaw with Michael “Mike” Cullen, 37, his son Michael, “Bubba,” Cullen, 15, and daughter Abigail, “Abby” Cullen, 7.
A flatbed truck hit the Cullen car from behind causing a chain reaction crash.
Abby Cullen, who was riding in the back seat of the family’s Toyota Camry with Dempsey and White, was also killed in the crash.
Mike Cullen and his son, Bubba were riding in the front seat. Both sustained life-threatening injuries and were taken to the University of Maryland Hospital Baltimore Shock Trauma Center.
Nine other people, including the truck driver, were involved in the eight-vehicle pile up.
The truck driver was not injured, but five occupants of passenger vehicles suffered minor injuries. Of those, four were taken to a local hospital, treated, and released.
Bethany Dempsey and Mike Cullen had both been previously married. They merged their families about two years ago and resided in Warsaw.
The pair had just picked up Cullen’s son and daughter from BWI Airport where they had returned from a trip to Florida to visit their mother, Shannon Cullen.
Bethany Dempsey’s son Logan White, 10 was visiting his father James J. White (Jay) in King George at the time of the accident.
A service on Saturday opened with a hymn sung by Anthony Campbell that set the tone for Rappahannock Church of Christ Senior Minister Walker Gaulding and Spotswood Baptist Church Associate Pastor Rev. Dan Cook’s remarks.
Bethany and her daughter were laid to rest in private following Saturday’s service.
According to Gaulding, Bubba Cullen was released from the hospital over the weekend and is staying with his mother.
“Bubba is doing well and I was told that Mike is still in the hospital, but is progressing every day,” said Gaulding.
Marilyn Johnson of the King George Sheriff’s Office said she had been informed via an email from Sheriff Dempsey that Mike Cullen is still listed as critical and remains in the ICU at Shock Trauma.
Abigail “Abby” Cullen will be buried Sept. 5 in Warsaw.
