A 22-year-old King George man is being held without bond in the Rappahannock Regional Jail charged with making a threat to detonate a bomb in the Spotsylvania Towne Centre Mall last August.
Westley C. Witherspoon is charged with one count of threatening to bomb or damage a building, a felony, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
The bomb threat was phoned into the mall on Aug. 23, in the late afternoon. Store managers were called by security ordering them to evacuate employees and customers.
Spotsylvania Sheriff’s officers and mall security officers escorted customers and employees out of the mall and began a lengthy search for an explosive device.
After several hours, employees were allowed to return for their personal items, and the mall was closed for the night while the search continued, but no bomb was found.
Witherspoon was arrested on Nov. 7, after an extensive investigation. Sheriff’s officers would not comment on a possible motive, but their investigation is continuing while Witherspoon remains in custody.
