Lights On Afterschool at the YMCA

The King George Family YMCA Afterschool Program sponsored a Lights On Afterschool rally on Thursday, October 3 from 5-6 pm.  The rally was one of more than 7,500 such events around the nation that day, the 13th annual Lights On Afterschool, organized by the Afterschool Alliance. Elizabeth Clark, Executive Director supports expanding afterschool opportunities so that every child who needs a program has access to one, and the harm that results from budget cuts and freezes to these program.

Participants in the Lights On Afterschool rally included Supervisors Joe Grzeika, Dale Sisson, Jr. and Joe LoBuglio, teachers from the county schools and parents.   The event will highlight three of the significant contributions that afterschool programs make to King George County, keeping kids safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn, and relieving working parents of worries about their children's activities during the afternoon hours. Parents, supporters, and community members are attended the event.
The King George Family YMCA received a grant from VPOST (Virginia Partnership For Out of School Time) www.vpost.org. to hold the event.  The children made posters displaying the importance of the YMCA Program.  The middle school students created a video of children in the program telling why they come to the YMCA, what they do in the program, and how the program has changed their lives.  Children said they enjoy swimming, gym time, the playground and the counselors.  One surprise from the children was they were getting their homework done now that they come to the Y!  Making new friends topped how the program has changed their lives.
Visitors were given a healthy snack and observed the different centers that children have to choose from during the after school program.  The Supervisors were a big hit and participated in some “Gak” making.  The end of the evening was a round of dodge ball.  Kids Vs. Parents.  We all know who won that but everyone had a great time.
The King George Family YMCA Fun Club is open from 6:30 am and closes at 6:30 pm.  Children are engaged in many different activities including physical activity, arts and humanities, literature, swimming, and homework time.  If you are interested in the program please contact Elizabeth Clark at This email address is being protected from spambots.
