Benson, new school superintendent, in town

King George’s new division school superintendent Rob Benson is in town this week and was introduced at Monday’s School Board meeting by Chairman Mike Rose and provided a welcome token gift of a pictorial book of the history of King George County. Benson will likewise also be introduced by Rose to the Board of Supervisors at Tuesday’s meeting this week (following our press time).

If you’ve missed those two opportunities, you can catch him again this week on Thursday, June 29, at a town hall meeting, 7-9 p.m. at King George Middle School (former high school building) auditorium, located at the corner of Dahlgren Road and Kings Hwy (Routes 206 & 3).

School Board member Ken Novell will introduce Benson at the town hall meeting jointly hosted and conducted with Dahlgren Supervisor Ruby Brabo.

Benson is in town for a few days to meet and greet various school officials and gain more impressions of the school division that he will officially head effective July 1.

Benson said while he was here this week he wanted to get some ideas for at least a temporary home for his family, with his spouse, Shelley, to take over that job when she gets here, along with their son, Samuel, in the next couple of weeks.

Benson and his family will be making a move from their present location in Marietta, Georgia. He is leaving his position as one of six area assistant superintendents in the Cobb County School District, the second largest school division in Georgia and the 26th largest in the nation, with more than 106,000 students in 114 schools in the Atlanta area.

While Benson is here this week, he is staying at his parents’ house in Woodbridge.

BENSON COMING HOME TO VIRGINIA

Benson is coming home to Virginia. He grew up in Northern Virginia and graduated from Woodbridge High School in Prince William County.

He earned a Bachelor’s of Music from West Virginia University in 1988 and a Master’s in Education Leadership from George Mason University in 1993. He began post Master’s coursework with Virginia Tech and is completing requirements to earn a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Benson is a career educator with 23 years experience. He spent 15 years in Prince William, where he began his teaching and administrative career. There he served as an elementary and high school music teacher, basketball and soccer coach, assistant principal of Stonewall Jackson High School, and then principal of C.D. Hylton High School.

Following that, Benson took a position in Cobb County, Georgia, as a high school principal. In 2007, Mr. Benson was promoted to Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction for the Cobb County School District.

Benson said he is “thrilled to become part of the King George community and King George County Schools.”

SALARY & BENEFITS

The School Board voted earlier this month to hire Benson for an initial term of four years from a field of 23 applicants, nine of which were interviewed, then narrowed to three for final consideration.

His salary is set at $134,400 for the first year, along with $5,100 for an annual car allowance and $5,000 a year paid into an annuity or deferred compensation plan plus conversion of a portion of unused vacation and sick leave to add to Benson’s annuity plan at the end of each contract year. He gets full family hospitalization and medical insurance, along with 20 days annual leave not counting legal holidays, 20 days of sick leave and all other benefits in the policy manual for other 12-month employees.
