Funding would go for school security equipment for Sealston and King George Elementary
Superintendent Rob Benson announced this week at the July 14 School Board meeting that the King George school division is applying for another $100,000 school security equipment grant this summer.
At Monday’s meeting, Benson told the School Board, “I have the application ready to go and to submit for Sealston and King George Elementary.”
If the King George school division is awarded a grant this year, it will be used for the purchase and installation of a card swipe system that records door access with an alert system that can be monitored in the school office when a door is ajar.
Last year was the first year the state made the grant available, with the school division applying for and receiving a grant award in the maximum award amount of $100,000 to purchase and install those same access control systems at Potomac Elementary and King George Middle schools. The high school had a similar system installed when it was built a few years ago.
A local match of 25 percent of the grant amount is required.
That means that if the division receives notification of a grant award, the School Board would be required to take action to accept the grant and to designate a source of funding for the $25,000 required match.
Benson told The Journal he thought he could probably find the money in the 2014-15 budget adding he wouldn’t want the division to miss out on the opportunity.
Last year the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) awarded the school security grants of varying amounts up to the maximum of $100,000 to 459 Virginia schools and regional education programs.
The grant application is due to the state by Aug. 1, with grant awards expected to be announced on Sept. 1.
Grant award notifications will be sent each year to school divisions by early September, informing the school division of the total grant award approved for each eligible school for which it applied. Grant funding will be disbursed on a reimbursement basis.
