Teachers enthusiastic about land bequest

The King George School Board last week was informed that King George High School teachers are enthusiastic about a land bequest that is in the offering for the division.
Superintendent Candace Brown told the School Board at its meeting on Sept. 12 that science teachers and others had come up with several ideas for use of the 8.81-acre property that M. Elois Rogers bequeathed to the division. The wooded acreage is located

Land bequeathed to King George division

The King George School Board was informed that the division was recently bequeathed some land within the county.

Superintendent Candace Brown provided scant information to the three School Board members who were in attendance at a meeting on Aug. 22, with Mike Rose and Lynn Pardee absent.

Brown distributed an Aug. 3 letter from a law firm in Media, PA, which included a formal notice of the estate administration in regard to the school system being named a beneficiary in the will of M. Elois Rogers, who died on June 26, 2011.

Four KG schools fail AYP

Of five division schools, only KGHS passes

King George High School is the only county school that has met or exceeded all federal accountability objectives during the last school year. The four other county schools missed the mark by failing to meet federal accountability standards.

That’s according to national Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) ratings released last week for 2011-12 by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Ratings for the

School Board shifts administrators

The King George Schools have been doing some personnel shuffling this summer.

As reported last week, Kevin D. Newman was hired as principal of King George Middle School to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Seidah Ashshaheed, which was effective June 30. Newman came on board at the end of last week, following action by the School Board on July 18. He lives in King George and most recently served as principal of Colonial Beach Elementary School since 2006.

Division to pay FICA and Medicare costs

The King George School Board is paying the FICA and Medicare payroll taxes for employees who will this week receive bonuses on June 30. The end-of-year bonuses will be paid on time, as originally scheduled, according to county accounting manager, Robyn Shugart.

That clarification that FICA and Medicare would be picked up by the division was provided at this week’s School Board meeting on June 27 by Chairman Renee Parker. The additional cost for the bonuses was not

School Board balks at proposed lease to library

During its expansion library plans to use closed middle school

The King George School Board postponed approval of a proposed lease of the former middle school building to the Smoot Library Board until changes are made to the document to limit its liability for providing safe drinking water and tighten other clauses to improve the School Board’s position regarding potential costs.

The draft lease as reviewed at the June 13 meeting proposed the library pay the School Board the nominal fee of $10 per month in addition to $500 per month for all utilities, regardless of actual usage or billings. The term of the lease was proposed at one year, and then month-to-month until two months following the issuance of a certificate of occupancy for the main library, following expansion completion, unless otherwise terminated or extended.

FORMER MIDDLE SCHOOL
The School Board ceremoniously closed the former middle school building to students two years ago, in June 2009, when it realized its schools were no longer overcrowded, but instead had excess capacity following the opening of a new 1,700-pupil high school earlier in 2009, at a cost in excess of $42 million.
