The King George Board of Supervisors will hold public hearings next week on April 17 to take comment on a proposed 2012-13 budget that totals $62,419,950.
The board also wants to hear what people have to say about a possible real estate tax increase of up to four-cents per $100 valuation that was advertised on a split vote of 3-2.
Ruby Brabo lead the charge on that potential hike, with Cedell Brooks and John LoBuglio agreeing. Joe Grzeika and Dale Sisson voted against the possibility of an increase that high. (See related article elsewhere in this issue.)

Budget public hearing on April 17
The King George Board of Supervisors voted last week on April 3 to advertise a real estate tax increase of up to 4-cents per $100 valuation on a split vote, 3-2. Supervisors Joe Grzeika and Dale Sisson voted against the possibility of an increase that high.
A hearing on the proposed 4-cent tax increase, or comments on any tax increase, will be heard on Tuesday, April 17, along with comments on the proposed 2012-13 budget. (See related article elsewhere in this issue.)
County administrator Travis Quesenberry proposed a budget that, if adopted, would need a maximum tax increase of 3-cents.
Grzeika said he could not support any tax increase. “I still have a problem with continuing to fund the stimulus dollars. I just don’t think that’s our responsibility. And I’d like to see that removed. That’s why I can’t support the rate increase.”
Grzeika has previously elaborated on that issue, along with Sisson. The federal stimulus money was short-term money that was supposed to be spent on non-recurring expenditures by the School Board. Now the School Board wants the county to make up the difference with local money, with over $817,000 of the School Board’s requested increase was earmarked for long-time positions for nurses and guidance counselor salaries that

More VDOT issues with unpaved roads
Last week’s approval to go forward with paving Route 682 (Eagles Nest Lane) in King George on a split vote did not put an end to prioritizing the rest of the numerous road upgrade decisions still confronting the Board of Supervisors.
The vote at a special meeting on March 26 only put to bed the latest contentious road issue in the county, but there are others bubbling to the surface. Supervisors have received lists of unpaved roads in the county. They also received a list of roads that are federal-eligible, meaning federal funding can be used for improvements under certain conditions.

Budget public hearing to be set for April 17
The King George Board of Supervisors this week will review revised preliminary budget figures for the upcoming 2012-13 fiscal year that begins on July 1.
On Tuesday, April 3, (following our press time) Supervisors are expected to vote to advertise a 3-cent increase on the real estate tax rate. The public hearing is expected to take place on April 17.
Whatever amount is advertised would be the highest hike that could actually be adopted at a later meeting. Anything lower than that, along with no increase, could also subsequently be adopted.
The current real estate/mobile home tax rate is 50-cents per $100 valuation. It is

Deed contains restrictions that make it unlikely for state acceptance
David Jones is one of several proponents petitioning King George to support the purchase of the Dahlgren Heritage Railroad Trail (DHRT) by the state to make it into a state park.
Jones is the president of the Friends of the DHRT. He was among seven speakers in favor of the idea at last week’s meeting of the Board of Supervisors on March 20.

The King George Wireless Authority board of directors is expected to hear the latest on the status of a legal complaint for breach of contract filed against Virginia Broadband filed last December 29, 2011.
The update is expected to take place during a closed session for the authority board to hear from legal counsel and discuss negotiating and litigating posture during a meeting on March 20 (following our press time).
The latest legal request took place on March 8 with Virginia Broadband cancelling a pre-trial hearing that had been scheduled for the following day on March 9 in the King George Circuit Court.

Fredericksburg is discontinuing bus service in King George this summer. The King George Board of Supervisors were informed last July that Fredericksburg would eliminate FREDericksburg Regional Transit (FRED) service in the county George beginning July 1 because they said county funding cutbacks from two routes to one last July 2011 made it no longer viable for the city to operate beyond the end of this coming June.
At that time, Supervisors Dale Sisson and Cedell Brooks had recently finished working with FRED officials to eliminate one route and redesign the remaining route, still at a hefty annual cost to the county.
Supervisors cut the county’s outlay for FRED in each of the last two budget cycles resulting in service reductions. Following a public hearing in mid-April 2011, the board voted to eliminate one of the two routes operating in King George and redesign the remaining route. That cut the county’s contribution to FRED from last fiscal year’s
