Colonial Beach boy shot in weekend hunting accident in King George

An 11-year-old Colonial Beach boy was shot Saturday while deer hunting with his father and others in King George County. The youth was sitting in the bed of his father’s pick-up at 6566 Winston Place when the accident occurred.

According to Lee Walker of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the boy and his father were deer hunting on the first day of general firearms season when the shooting happened.

“The father was sitting in the front of a parked pick-up, the boy was sitting in the back on a dog box when his 20-gauge shotgun discharged,” Walker said. The boy was hit in the left foot and rushed to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment.

Walker said the boy’s name and the father’s name could not be released because the boy is a minor. “We have a rule here that we don’t release names in this type of accident,” Walker said.

Walker said he hoped the accident would serve as a reminder to hunters to “Consider any firearm a loaded firearm and use as much precaution as possible.” Hunters are urged to keep guns unloaded and weapons on safety when not actually hunting.
