Dorothy Mae McGinniss

Dorothy Mae McGinniss, 88, of King George County went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 5, 2013.

She was the daughter of the late Fannie Mae Laird of Tangier Island and John H. Lewis of Irvington.

Born in Irvington on Aug. 28, 1924, Dorothy was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and wife.
She was preceded in death by her husband and sweetheart of 69 years, Ralph Wayne McGinniss; sister Irene Dodd; and half brother John “Wiggy” Winegar.

The family she leaves behind includes brother John E. Lewis (Karen) of Jupiter, FL; half sisters Joan Morgan (Alvin) of Colonial Beach and Pat Dessecker (Tom) of Taneytown, MD; brother-in-law Merle McGinniss of King George; and sister-in-law Betty Winegar of Lottsburg. She is also survived by her loving children, Wayne McGinniss (Ellen) and Jack McGinniss (Cathy), both of King George, Dianne Sartin (Bill) of Crestview, FL, Lynne Mitchell (David) of King George and Sandy Lay (Nick) of Kure Beach, NC; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

As a young girl she attended Irvington Elementary School and graduated from Colonial Beach High School, where she was the captain of the Drifters basketball team and a May court attendant. Colonial Beach Methodist Church was her first church home. After she married and moved to King George, she became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. It was there she grew in faith and put her trust in God to guide her path.

Dorothy served on many committees at Shiloh, including WMU, GA’s, Baptist Youth Fellowship, Vacation Bible School, Hostess Committee and Women’s Prayer Circle. She was an active member of the Joyful Sisters/ Betty McGinniss Class and loved the Lord and her Shiloh family. Dorothy was also a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and AARP.

A woman of faith and the heart of the McGinniss family, she shaped their spirituality by her timeless Christian example. With a real zest for life, she loved to dance and travel. She had a passion for flowers, gardening and bird watching, but her true love was always nurturing her family and friends.

Dorothy McGinniss was the type of woman who never knew a stranger. She was a giver, whether it was a homemade cake, jellies, her famous pickles or a spot of tea and conversation. One’s spirit was always lifted in her presence. She was always ready with open arms, a kind spirit and a loving heart.

The family received family and friends Thursday, May 9, at the Shiloh Baptist Family Life Center. A funeral was held Friday, May 10, in the church sanctuary. A memorial reception followed the graveside service.

Donations may be made in her honor to Shiloh Baptist Church, King George Fire and Rescue, or Mary Washington Hospice.
