James Marion “Red” Royal, 79, of Ruther Glen passed away Monday, June 10, 2013, at his home. He formerly resided in Spotsylvania County for 35 years.

He was born in Wilkes County, NC, to the late Oscar and Lillian Royal.
James honorably served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years. After retiring from the Navy in March 1973, he worked for several defense contractors. Ultimately, he went to work for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, where he proudly served until his retirement in October 2004.

James was also a proud member of the Knights of Pythias, Lodge 22, and BPOE, Lodge 875, chairing and participating in many philanthropic activities during his membership.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Pearl Harbour Royal. He is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Roederer, (Eric), of Ruther Glen; a son, Tyrus Royal, (Mary Therese), of Farmington, CT; and a granddaughter, Haley Royal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Peggy Magee and Betty Nowlin; and a brother, Hubert “Gus” Royal.

James’ family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 21, with the Rev. John Ayres officiating. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, James’ family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to an American Cancer Society of one’s choice.
