Galen W. Rothrock

Galen Wayne Rothrock, 92, of King George County died Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born on the farm of his parents, Elbert Q. Rothrock and Ollie Belle Lichty near Davenport, NE, in 1921. This was part of the same farm his grandparents had homesteaded in the late 1870s. He grew up helping his father and brothers farm during the dust-bowl years of the ‘30s. Following graduation from high school as valedictorian, he attended Grand Island Business College until he was offered a job in 1940, with the War Department. He served in the Army Air Force in Guam during the end of World War II. He retired from the Office of Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Department of the Army as a management analyst in June 1976, after 35 years of service (29 years at the Pentagon) and was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award.

Following retirement, Galen and his wife, Margie, built a home on the farm where Margie was born and raised in King George. He enjoyed planting trees and shrubs and working in the yard and garden. He enjoyed taking family and friends on tractor-pulled wagon rides through their woods on the trails he had made.

He was a member and deacon of Shiloh Baptist Church in King George and served on many of their committees. He was a member and past president of the King George Ruritan Club.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Louise Rothrock of Dallas, OR; a daughter, Marnette Hall of King George; two granddaughters, Samantha Hall of Las Vegas, NV, and Nicki Hall of Stafford County; a brother and sister-in-law, Dayton and Rebecca Rothrock of McPherson, KS.; a sister-in-law, Leah Rothrock of Davenport; a great-granddaughter, Cameron Solt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie Hudson Rothrock, brothers Dale Rothrock, J. Quintin Rothrock, sisters Viola Lowe, Martha Helgeson and Miriam Cunningham.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mike Jessee officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hudson Family cemetery, King George Courthouse.

The family received friends on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George .

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Shiloh Baptist Church Children’s Playground Fund, 13457 Kings Highway, King George, VA 22485; or to a charity of one’s choice.
