T. Eldred Lee Jr., 94, of Fredericksburg, former member of City Council, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at his home.
He was chairman emeritus and past owner of Lee-Curtis Insurance Service, Fredericksburg.
Mr. Lee was born September 7, 1919 at Shiloh in King George County, the only son of Thomas E. Lee Sr. and Elizabeth G. Lee. He was a 1937 graduate of King George High School. He attended several business schools. Mr. Lee was the first to be drafted from King George County prior to World War II. He served five years in the U. S. Army during World War II, including combat in the South Pacific.
Mr. Lee entered the insurance business in 1949 after graduation from insurance school. In 1957, Mr. Lee and his wife, Nannie Curtis Lee, purchased W.E. Curtis from his father-in-law, William Curtis. The business today is known as Lee-Curtis, Freeman, Graves and Hall Insurance. During his insurance career he was active in many insurance associations. He was founding member and former trustee of the Certified Professional Insurance Agents Society, known as the CPIA. He was past president of the Fredericksburg Association of Life Underwriters and received their Underwriter of the Year Award. He was past president of the Professional Insurance Agents Association of Virginia and D.C., having received their Agent of the Year Award. Mr. Lee was also bestowed honorary membership of the association. Over his career he served as an agent advisor to many insurance companies.
Mr. Lee was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, a lifetime deacon, Sunday school teacher and served as the church treasurer for 24 years. He served as trustee of several Baptist institutions and schools, moderator of the Baptist Association of Fredericksburg and was elected and served on the Baptist General Board of Virginia.
Mr. Lee served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, past board member of the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation Inc., served on the Fredericksburg Stafford Park Authority, Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation Commission and the Vocational Educational Advisory Board of the Fredericksburg City Schools.
Mr. Lee was very active with the Boy Scouts of America and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was the first scouter in Virginia to receive the Good Shepherd Award. He also received the Good Scout Award. He was active with Boy Scout Troop 179 and also served on troop, district and national committees.
Mr. Lee was chosen as Fredericksburg Jaycees Boss of the Year. He is a life member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a member of BPO Elk Lodge #875 for more than 54 years, life member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and life member of the American Legion Post. He was also a member of the Northern Neck Historical Society, King George Historical Society, Fredericksburg Area Museum, Historic Fredericksburg Foundation and former member of Fredericksburg Country Club.
Survivors include his five sons, Thomas E. Lee III and his wife, Susan, Robert C. Lee, John G. Lee and his wife, Brenda, James C. Lee and his wife, Cathy, Franklin S. Lee Sr. and his wife, Anna; daughter Pamela L. McLeod and her husband, John; 12 grandchildren Kathrina Urann and her husband, Michael, Thomas E. Lee IV and his wife, Lynne, Matthew T. Lee, Stephen M. Lee and his wife, Stephanie, Rebecca E. Lee, Jeffrey C. Lee and his wife, Ashley, Joseph H. Lee, Franklin S. Lee Jr., Robert B. Lee, John E. McLeod Jr., Christina N. McLeod and William L. McLeod; four great-grandchildren Cassandra Urann, Richard Urann, Abigail Urann and Thomas E. Lee V.; and his sister, Mary Elizabeth Saunders.
Mr. Lee was preceded in death by his wife, Nannie C. Lee; his parents, his sisters, Christine Lewis and Geraldine McDaniel; and stepmother Ivy Moss King Lee.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, at Fairview Baptist Church with Dr. Robert W. Sizemore, Rev. Chester Smith and Rev. Lawrence A. Davies officiating. Entombment will be private.
