Area Deaths - May 30, 2012

Robert Acree

Robert Acree, 58, departed this life Thursday, May 17, 2012, at his residence in Champlain.

He is survived by one daughter, Damaris Acree of Richmond; one son, Marcus Acree of Arlington; two sisters, Cheryl Holmes (Michael) of Tappahannock and Telia Acree of Champlain; and one brother, George Acree (Jennifer) of Arlington.

A visitation was held Thursday, May 24, at Washington Funeral Home  in Tappahannock, and one hour before the service at the church.

The service was held Friday, May 25, at Antioch Baptist Church, Champlain, with the Rev. Daniel Goodall officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Lynn H. Gilliland

Lynn H. Gilliland, 74, of King George County passed away Saturday, May 19, 2012, at home.

Lynn was born Dec. 15, 1937, in Muskogee, OK, to the late Harry H. and Anna Mae Gilliland. He grew up in Muskogee and graduated from Muskogee High School and North Eastern State College in Tahlequah, OK. During his high school and college years, he was a three-time winner of the First State Award for Excellence in Designing and Craftsmanship of the Fisher Body Craftsman’s Guild model car competition.

He moved to Dahlgren in 1961 for a job at the (then) Naval Weapons Laboratory. He worked in the U.S. Navy Fleet Ballistic Missile Program for many years and retired in December of 1993 from the Naval Surface Warfare Center.

He had many interests over the years including photography, cars, ham radio and model railroading. 

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in King George.

Lynn is survived by his wife of 43 years, Frances.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, May 23, at Trinity United Methodist Church, King George.

David Shawn Richards

A funeral for David Shawn Richards, 42, of Colonial Beach was held  Saturday, May, 26, 2012, at Colonial Beach Baptist Church. Interment was in Historyland Cemetery, King George.

Funeral arrangements are by Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home, Warsaw.

Gus Melvin Schools, Jr.

Gus Melvin “Billy” Schools, Jr., 78, of Caret passed away Friday, May 25, 2012.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley Schools; daughter Nancy Jacobus (David) of Culpeper County; sons Michael L. Schools (Tammy) and Dennis R. Schools, all of Tappahannock; and other loving family members. He was preceded in death by a son, Melvin Wayne Schools.

A funeral was held Sunday, May 27, in Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock. Interment is in Upper Essex Baptist Church cemetery, Caret.

Windell Johnson

Windell Johnson, 60, departed this life on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at his residence in Newtown.

He is survived by his mother, Laura B. Johnson of St. Stephens Church; one son, Steven Johnson of Tappahannock; four sisters, Mary M. Jeter (Truett) of Bowling Green, Carolyn Nelson of Tappahannock, and Pauline Johnson and Patricia Johnson, both of St. Stephens Church; four brothers, Charles L. Johnson Sr. (Thelma), Luther E. Johnson, Robert D. Johnson Sr. (Barbara) and Prentis Johnson, all of St. Stephens Church. He also leaves a longtime friend and companion, Glennis Fauntleroy.

Visitation was held Sunday, May 27, at Washington Funeral Home,  Tappahannock. 

A service was held Monday, May 28, at First Mount Olive Baptist Church, Newtown, with the Rev. Drucilla Tate officiating. The Rev. Dennis Dabney was the eulogist. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Barbara Joan Smith

Barbara Joan Smith, 76, of Colonial Beach passed away Saturday, May 26, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Barbara had retired as a co-owner of Smith Service Center in Colonial Beach. She was a member of Colonial Beach United Methodist Church and an active volunteer worker.

She is survived by her husband, Harry “June” Smith Jr; three sons, Tommy Hayden (Linda) of Colonial Beach, Kenny Hayden (Jenny) of Louisville, KY, and Michael Smith of the home; four daughters, Linda Ward (Pat) of Mount Holly, Terry Puffinburger (Danny) of Colonial Beach, Barbara “BJ” Madison (John) of Colonial Beach and Rachel Zumstein of Jeffersonton; three brothers, Ernest Travers (Carolyn) of Germantown, MD, Eddie Travers (Donna) of Ocala, FL, and Bernie Dodson of Springfield; a sister, Peggy Hofmann of Titusville, FL; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Tuesday, May 29, at Colonial Beach United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Yunho Eo officiating. Burial will be private.
