Area Deaths - February 15, 2012

Roy Lewis Jessee, Sr.

Roy Lewis Jessee Sr., 74, of Fredericksburg passed away Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Mr. Jessee was an avid NASCAR and Washington Redskins fan, and he loved to fish. He belonged to VFW 290.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Jessee of Fredericksburg; son Roy Jessee Jr. (Theresa), of Spotsylvania County; daughters Christina Jessee of Stafford County, Peggy Payne (Roger), of Stafford, Jeri Williams of Winchester, Diane Wall (Butch), of Louisa County and Vickie Sullivan of Spotsylvania; sister Verona Marion of King George County; 20 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Willie Jessee; son William Lewis Jessee; and brother Randy Jessee.

A service was held Friday, Feb. 10, at Covenant Funeral Home, Fredericksburg. Entombment followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Frank Wayne Griffith

Frank Wayne Griffith, 69, loving husband, father, grandfather and brother passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012.

Frank attended the University of Richmond and was an acclaimed southpaw pitcher who signed with the New York Mets, playing until injured. He was recently inducted into the King George High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Frank worked for more than 35 years as a sales executive for Woodfin Oil Co. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Meadowbrook Country Club. He enjoyed being with his “Bubbas,” spoiling his grandchildren and taking care of his loving mother. Frank was a generous, easy-going man who brought fun and laughter to all those who encountered him in life.

Frank is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Susan Effron Griffith; mother Margaret Allensworth Griffith; elder daughter Elizabeth Griffith Jens (Eric); younger daughter Laura Griffith Ritchie (Patrick); four grandchildren, Hannah Margaret Jens, Eric Jens IV, Madison Grace Ritchie and Lucas Griffith Ritchie; two sisters, Judy Griffith Crockett and Gay Griffith Baker (Bud); and two sisters-in-law, Elaine Effron Dunn and Lynn Effron Katz (Alan). Frank is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

A visitation was held Friday, Feb. 10, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. Burial will be private in Westmoreland County.

Mary Evelyn Holmes Rodgers

Mary Evelyn Holmes Rodgers, 52, departed this life Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, at her residence in Henrico County.

She is survived by her husband, Stefan Rodgers; one daughter, Charlene Holmes of Richmond; two sons, Anthony and Demetrius Holmes, both of Richmond; four sisters, Diane Harvey, Arlene Newbill and Phyllis Harvey, all of St. Stephens Church, and Wanda Robinson of King George County; and three brothers, Ivory Holmes of St. Stephens Church and Robert Fauntleroy and James Holmes, both of Aylett.

A viewing was held Friday, Feb. 10, at Washington Funeral Home, 1404 Tappahannock Blvd. A funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 11, at First Mount Olive Baptist Church, Newtown, with the Rev. Fred Holmes officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

June Virginia Garner Ketchel

June Virginia Garner Ketchel, 88, of Colonial Beach passed away Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012.

Born in Washington, D.C., on June 23, 1923, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Rufus Atkinson, killed in action in World War II; her only daughter, Donna Marie Atkinson Frese; and her second husband, Clarence Ketchel on March 19, 1998.

Surviving are son Barry Ketchel of Colonial Beach; two grandsons, Barry Ketchel Jr. of Colonial Beach and Christopher Johnston of Fulks Run; two granddaughters, Jamie Ketchel of Colonial Beach and Jennifer Sova of Roanoke; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Nash and Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, followed by a graveside service at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.

Calvin W. Norris, Sr.

Calvin W. Norris Sr., 83, of King George County passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012. He was surrounded by his entire family at the time of his passing.

Calvin was a true patriot and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. He then served faithfully and proudly with the U.S. Railroad Service, as had his father and uncle, before retiring once again. He was a member and supporter of the National Rifle Association, serving as a marksmanship instructor. Calvin was proud of his service to the United States and of his children who carry on his patriotic legacy as employees of federal civil service and King George County public service.

He is survived by his wife, Bert Norris; children Charlotte, Calvin Jr., Patti, Donna and Jim; and his loved ones, Joyce Nave and her children, 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Calvin left a large circle of friends who will always have fond memories of him.

Burial will be private.

William Clifton Jones

William Clifton Jones, 84, of Colonial Beach passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Clifton was born in Westmoreland County near Montross. He retired from the Virginia ABC Board after 38 years of service, with most of his career as manager of the ABC store in Colonial Beach. Clifton was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War II and a member of Masonic Lodge 199 in Colonial Beach, serving as master in 1960.

Clifton is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean C. Jones of the home; two sons, W.C. Jones Jr. (Debby), of Mechanicsville and Brent Jones (Cathy), of Colonial Beach; three grandchildren, Taylor, Wesley and Kayla; and sister-in-law Beatrice Jones of Montross.

A funeral was held on Monday, Feb. 13, at at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, with the Rev. Richard Headley officiating. Interment followed in Round Hill Baptist Cemetery, King George.

Ricky Davis

Ricky Davis, 46, of Fort Washington, Md., son of Zellda Carter Davis, died at home Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012.

A service will be held at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Macedonia Baptist Church, Colonial Beach. Lee Funeral Home, Warsaw, is handling arrangements.

James Bernard Payne

James Bernard Payne, 69, of Montross departed this life on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, in a Mechanicsville hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Lavada Payne; one daughter, Marjorie Beverly of Fredericksburg; three sons, James Bernard Payne of Fredericksburg and Keith Payne and Anthony Reynolds, both of Tappahannock.

A funeral was held Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Morning Star Baptist Church, Montross, with the Rev. Charles Payton, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Services of comfort entrusted to Washington Funeral Home, 1404 Tappahannock Blvd., Tappahannock, VA.

Ralph T. Jenkins

Ralph T. Jenkins, 66, of Colonial Beach died Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at his residence.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Vicki, who was the love of his life; his son, Chris Wade Jenkins (Nancy), of Richmond; his stepson, Wayne Bellamy (Liz), and their son, Jason, all of Dunfield; his sister, Joanne Jenkins Doggett (Donny), of Fredericksburg; his brother-in-law, Ronald Guice and his daughter, Alicia, of Fairfax; his sister-in-law, Debbie Guice (Steve), of Fairfax; and two little ladies who brought him great joy singing to them “A Bushel and a Peck,” his granddaughter Kylee and his niece Nicole.

A service will be held at noon Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel.

Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Carolyn A. Marshall

Carolyn A. Marshall, 70, of King George County passed away Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at her home.

Mrs. Marshall was born Nov. 22, 1941, in Washington, D.C., to Kenneth and Virginia Olson. She grew up in Alexandria and graduated from Mount Vernon High School.

She was the longtime proprietor of the Virginia Florist, a family business for 43 years, in the Belle View Shopping Center of Alexandria. Along with her family, she was a longtime resident of Alexandria.

Carolyn is survived by her husband of 46 years, B.T. Marshall; two sons, Erik Marshall and Mark Marshall (Amy); two grandchildren, Amanda and Adam Marshall; and her mother, Virginia C. Olson.

Carolyn was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was extremely proud of her family and always had a warm smile for everyone.

Carolyn’s positive outlook on life was an inspiration to everyone around her.

Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16, with interment to follow in Mount Comfort Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org.

Carol Bernice Beavers

Carol Bernice Beavers, 69, of King George County passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Carol had retired from Quarles Fuel Network and was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church in King George.

She is survived by three daughters, Teresa Settle of Nanjemoy, MD, and Glenda Ott and Carol Rose, both of King George; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Beavers, and her son, David E. Beavers Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Denny Greenwalt officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh Baptist Cemetery, King George.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Solid Rock Baptist Church, Box 628, King George, Va. 22485.

Lucille V. Weeks

Lucille V. Weeks, 89, of Henrico County, formerly of King George County, passed away Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at the home of her daughter in Henrico.
