John Edward Wood

John Edward Wood, 52, of King George County passed away Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at home.
John was a computer analyst and a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps.
He is survived by his wife, Yvette Wood; two sisters, Loretta Wood Staples and Mary Ellen Tippett; a brother, Billy Joe Wood Jr.; and three nieces, Chris, Ashley and Jenny.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 3, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with the Rev. Randy Allensworth officiating.
Burial will be private.

Muscoe Russell H. Garnett

Muscoe Russell Hunter Garnett Jr., 68, of “Elmwood Farm,” Loretto, died peacefully at his residence on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011.
Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Muscoe Russell Hunter Garnett and Helene Wallace Garnett. He was also preceded in death by his siblings Agnes Wallace Garnett Leary and James Mercer Garnett.
Muscoe grew up in New York City, graduated from Trinity School and attended McGill College. After school, he moved to Richmond, where he began his career in insurance. While in Richmond he met his wife, Roberta, and in 1979, moved with her and their two children, Madeline and Muscoe, to Elmwood, which was the summer home of his youth.
Muscoe continued to practice insurance in Fredericksburg and was active in his local community. He served on the vestry at Vauter’s Episcopal Church and was a former board member of Aylett Country Day School and St. Margaret’s School. Muscoe was influential in the fundraising for and formation of Tappahannock Volunteer Fire Department Station 3 in Loretto. He was dedicated to the preservation of farm land and was instrumental in the founding of the Essex County Countryside Alliance. Muscoe was also a longstanding member of the Society of The Cincinnati, Sons of the Revolution and the Commonwealth Club.
Muscoe is survived by his wife, Roberta Thompson Garnett; his daughter, Madeline Garnett Foresman and her husband, David Lee Foresman, of Alexandria; his son, Muscoe Russell Hunter Garnett III and his wife, Helen Mundin Garnett, of Richmond; four grandchildren, David Lee Foresman Jr., Eleanor Hunter Foresman, Henry Garnett Foresman and Muscoe Russell Hunter Garnett IV; one sister, Anne Garnett Boenning of Gladwyn, Pa.; one brother, Stephen Hunter Garnett of Jamestown, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Vauter’s Episcopal Church. Burial followed in the family cemetery at Elmwood.
Memorials may be made to Vauter’s Episcopal Church, Box 154, Champlain, VA, 22438; or the Tappahannock Volunteer Rescue Squad, Box 583, Tappahannock, VA, 22560.

Albert Ericksbon, Jr.

Albert Erickson Jr., 93, of Colonial Beach passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at Westmoreland Rehabilitation Center in Colonial Beach.
Albert graduated from MIT in 1941, with a master’s degree in chemical engineering. He retired from the U.S. government Naval Sea Systems Command. Albert was a member of the American Chemical Society and American Stamp Collectors.
Albert is survived by a daughter, Patricia Erickson of Lovettsville; a son, Richard Erickson and his wife, Susan, of Belle Vernon, PA; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie O. Erickson.
A funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 1, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Oak Grove. Interment followed at Historyland Memorial Park, King George.

Jay Harold Fowler, Sr.

Jay Harold Fowler Sr., 72, passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at Mary Washington Hospital surrounded by his family.
Jay was born Dec. 7, 1938, to Nelson and Lizzie Mae Fowler of Gaffney, SC. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 15 years. After retiring he enjoyed working as an electrician. In his free time he loved coaching his children in sports, bowling, playing horseshoes and spending time out on his boat fishing.
Jay is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gloria; son Wayne (Dianne) of King George; daughter-in-law Barbara of Dale City; grandchildren Jessie Coldwell (Willie), Brittany Fowler, Brooke Fowler, Felicia Cheek (Jeff), Ariana Cook (Kevin) , Espree Fowler, Mariah Fowler, Christian Fowler and Nelson Fowler; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Shirley McDaniel; and son Jay H. Fowler Jr.
The funeral was held Friday, Dec. 2, at Round Hill Baptist Church, King George. Interment followed in Historyland Memorial Park, King George.

Rev. Joseph E. Toliver

The Rev. Joseph E. Toliver, 91, of King George County passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg.
Pastor Toliver had served as pastor emeritus of Mulberry Baptist Church in Emerton, Zion Baptist Church in Chance and New Mount Zion Baptist Church in Caret.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Toliver of King George; two sons, Joseph E. Toliver Jr. (Dorothy) of Huber Heights, OH, and George T. Toliver of Myrtle Beach, SC; three daughters, Agatha T. Coleman (Edward) of Staunton, Jacqueline T. Hines (Paul) of Fort Washington, MD, and Ramona Toliver of Los Angeles, CA; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three stepsons, Antonio H. Lewis Sr. of Jacksonville, FL, and Mario V. Lewis (Carolyn) and Carlos H. Lewis (Peggy), all of Tappahannock; two stepdaughters, Detria M. McCallum (John) of Teaneck, NJ, and Imore M. Long (Roderick) of New Rochelle, NY; and five stepgrandchildren.
He was a life member of the Dahlgren Rescue Squad. He was a charter member and past president of the local NAACP Chapter. He served King George as a School Board and social services board member and as local chapter AARP president.
As a freedom fighter he was instrumental in the building of the Ralph Bunche High School in King George. He was a county school bus driver. He was also a past master and treasurer of King George Lodge 314, Prince Hall Affiliate, and was a past patron of Guiding Star 216, Order of the Eastern Star PHA.
A viewing was held Friday, Dec. 2, at Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal. The family also received friends at Antioch Baptist Church, in King George, VA 22485 and Essex High School in Tappahannock, VA.
A funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 3, at Essex High School, with Dr. Larry Finch as eulogist and the Rev. Lester Harvey officiating. Burial was in Salem Baptist Church cemetery, King George.

Clara L. Pugh

Clara L. Pugh, 78, of Champlain departed this life Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, in a Fredricksburg hospital.
She is survived by her husband, John L. Pugh; three daughters, Martha Newman of King George, Barbara Ann Campbell of Tappahannock and Florine Brown of Fredericksburg; two sons, Craig Parson of Colonial Beach and John E. Pugh of Warsaw; and sister Maggie Johnson and brother Fred Reynolds, both of Hustle.
A visitation was held Friday, Dec. 2, at Washington Funeral Home, 1404 Tappahannock Blvd., Tappahannock.
A funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 3, at Antioch Baptist Church, Champlain, with the Rev. Danial Goodall, pastor, officiating. The interment will be in the church cemetery.
Washington Funeral Home, Tappahannock, is handling the arrangements.

Cassandra Faye Bourne

Cassandra Faye Bourne, 61, of King George County passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Cassandra was a dedicated mother, loving grandmother and friend.
She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Cassandra is survived by a daughter, Cathy Hoffman (Paul), of King George; four sons, Arthur Bourne Jr. (Melissa), of Essex County, and Dennis (Anita), Tony (Terri), and youngest son, Michael Bourne, all of King George; her mother, Geraldine Shelton of King George; and two brothers, James Shelton and Walter Shelton Jr., both of King George; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Monday, Dec. 5, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel.
Interment followed in Historyland Cemetery, King George.

Marion Margaret Righter

Marion Margaret Righter, 39, of Colonial Beach winged her flight from this mortal realm on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2011.
Born Sept. 13, 1972, in Richmond, Marion left behind a loving family and close circle of friends.
Marion grew up in Rappahannock County and Virginia Beach.
At heart Marion was an artist, which was reflected in her career as an interior designer in Savannah, GA, and antiques shop owner in Atlanta.
Mourning her passing are her parents, Margaret and Richard Racine of Colonial Beach; her younger sister and dearest friend, Emily Righter Isenberg (Ethan), of Richmond; and her close companion, Charlie Harris of Colonial Beach. Other survivors include her maternal grandmother, Esther D. Dunlap; aunts Katherine Orlins and Carol Dunlap Scruggs of Northern Virginia; paternal grandmother Barbara Racine of Colonial Beach; and cousins Melanie Orlins of North Dakota and Andrew and Bryant Scruggs and her uncle, Michael Scruggs, of Northern Virginia.
A memorial celebration of her life was held on Monday, Dec. 5, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Colonial Beach.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Westmoreland County Animal Shelter; or St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Box 420, Colonial Beach, VA, 22443
Internment will be at St. Mary’s Columbarium at a later date.

Ronald Carroll Walsh, Sr.

Ronald Carroll Walsh, Sr., 64, of Colonial Beach, passed away on December 4, 2011.
He was retired from Facilities Management Division in Fairfax County.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald C. Walsh, Jr. (Terry), and Scott R. Walsh, all of Colonial Beach and a daughter Ashley P. Walsh of Annandale, VA, two brothers, Herbert W. Walsh, Jr. (Marilyn), of Garrisonville, and Larry M. Walsh (Pam), of Montross. He is also survived by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011 at Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel with Pastor Wade Wilkins officiating.
Interment will be in Currioman Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Ronald Walsh, Jr., Scott Walsh, Larry Walsh, Herbert W. Walsh, Jr., Adam Walsh and Shawn Walsh.

Charlotte Dyer Boran

Charlotte Dyer Boran, 96, passed away on December 2, 2011, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, VA.  
Mrs. Boran was born and raised in Alexandria, VA, where she met and married her late husband, Roland Joseph Boran.  
They raised three sons there and retired to Colonial Beach, VA, in 1975.  There she became a devoted member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church.  Her wit, charm, and sparkling personality won her countless friends in the Colonial Beach community.
She is survived by her three sons, Edgar Louis (Kathleen) of Spring, TX; Roland Michael (Christine) of Woolwine, VA; and Paul David (companion Diana) of Woodstock, VA, and a sister, Bette Dyer Walling, of Banning, CA.  
She is also survived by nine grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren, all of whom loved their “Sharlie” very deeply.  
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church, 12 Lossing Avenue, Colonial Beach, Virginia.
