Area Deaths - April 6, 2011

Joe Ferguson

Joe Louis Ferguson, 62, of King George County passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Stafford Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Elaine Ferguson; one daughter, Katisha Washington; one son, Joe “Joey” Ferguson Jr.; two brothers, John and Al Ferguson; two stepdaughters, Wanda Gross and Angela Scott; one stepson, Billy Scott; and 12 grandchildren.
A viewing was held Friday, April 1, at Cedell Brooks Funeral Home in Port Royal.
The funeral was held Saturday, April 2, at Shiloh Baptist Church in Port Royal, with the Rev. Lewis Yancey officiating. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Cemetery.

Randolph David Hopkins

Randolph David “Ranny” Hopkins passed away Friday, April 1, 2011, at the Mary Washington Convalescent & Nursing Care Home in Colonial Beach after a lengthy illness.
Ranny was born on Dec. 4, 1926, and was a lifelong resident of Colonial Beach.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice Dishman Hopkins; two sons, David Hopkins (Donna), of Fredericksburg and Douglas Hopkins (Heidi), of King George ; a daughter, Norma Griffin (Steve), of New Market, Md.; five grandchildren, Zachary and Jacob Hopkins, Kailyn Manseau and Amanda and Kenneth Hopkins; a great-grandson, Connor Manseau; and a sister, Patricia Rose of Colonial Beach.
He was preceded in death by siblings William Hopkins, Marjorie Toney, Elizabeth Conklin, Marion Lemons, John Hopkins and Donald Hopkins.
Ranny spent his lifetime involved with water activities including fishing, shrimping and as a ferry boat crewman. He retired after more than 25 years as a marine patrol officer with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, April 9, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, with the family receiving friends an hour prior to the service.
A private interment will be held in Pope’s Creek Baptist Church cemetery at a later time.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in his name to the Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department or the American Cancer Society.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mary Washington Convalescent & Nursing Care Home for their exemplary care during his stay with them.

Mary Turlington

Mary Turlington, age 77, of Blackberry Lane in Mrytle Beach,SC, died Sunday, April 3, 2011, at Conway Medical Center.
Mrs. Turlington was born in Danville, VA, a daughter of the late Raymond Lawson and Hannah Sizer Adams. She was a member of Grand Strand Baptist Church and retired from the United States Government, Patent and Trademark Office.
 Mrs. Turlington was a Realtor with Re/Max Allegiance, Colonial Beach, VA.  In 2004, she and her husband moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where she continued her real estate career with Re/Max Ocean Forest, retiring in September, 2010.
 Surviving are her husband, Gene T. Turlington of Myrtle Beach, SC, one son, David Smoot  (Tonya), Roanoke, VA, one sister, Shirley Terry (Jack),  Conway, SC, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two nephews, special niece, Sandra Terry, special friend, Janice Stone, and her special children, Cuddles, Precious and Kitty Cat.
 Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 5 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, with Rev. Kevin Lambert officiating.  Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

Joan B. Ferrell

Joan B. Ferrell, 74, of King George County passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at home.
Joan was a retired dispatcher for the King George Sheriff’s office, and was a longtime member of Round Hill Baptist Church.
Her hobbies included working with flowers, gardening, feeding and watching birds at her home.
Joan is survived by a son, Michael Wayne Motley of Virginia; a brother Rodney B. Ferrell and his wife Barbara, of King George; two nieces, Anna Marie Langrehr and Shelly Ferrell, both of North Carolina; a nephew, Ernie Lopez of King George.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gertrude and Bernard Ferrell and her longtime companion, Lacy Richardson.
The family wishes to thank the many caregivers she had over the last months.  
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 8 at Round Hill Baptist Church, King George with the Rev. Ted James officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5-7p.m. Thurs. April 7 at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Round Hill Baptist Church, Box 467, KG, VA, 22485 or to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpointe Pkwy, Frederibkcburg, VA 22407.
