Tommie Earl Caraway

Tommie Earl Caraway, 94, of King George County died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at his home.
Mr. Caraway retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years. He also retired from the Dept. of Defense having worked at Cherry Point Marine Base in Cherry Point, NC. Mr. Caraway was also a Mason.
Survivors include his daughter, Donna “Anne” Caraway-Sweet; sister Margie Lee of New Bern, N.C.; two grandchildren, Stephen Stilley and Chris Stilley; and four great-grandchildren, Brandon Stilley, Summer Anne Stilley, Lindsey Stilley and Cameron Stilley.
A celebration of life service will be held in New Bern, NC, at a later date.

Alexander Martin

Alexander Martin, 49, of Tappahannock departed this life Feb. 11, 2011, in a local hospital.
He is survived by his mother, Leeanna Elizabeth Martin; two sisters, Geraldine Tompkins of Tappahannock and Bertharine Ashton of Montross; and one brother, Elmer Martin Jr. of Tappahannock.
A visitation was held Friday, Feb. 18, at Washington Funeral Home, 1404 Tappahannock Blvd., Tappahannock. A funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 19, at Essex High School, Airport Road, Tappahannock, with the Rev. Floyd Johnson officiating. The interment was in Beulah Baptist Church cemetery in Minor.

Samuel Phillip Bushrod

Samuel Phillip Bushrod, 81, of Colonial Beach died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011.
A funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 19, at Macedonia Baptist Church in Colonial Beach.
Arrangements are by Lee Funeral Home, King George.

Margaret Elizabeth Thurston

Margaret Elizabeth Thurston Newton, the youngest daughter of Otis T. Thurston and Daisy M. Milby, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at 88 years of age.
Mrs. Newton was born and raised in King & Queen County and lived most of her married life in King George County and was a resident of Spotsylvania County for the past 26 years.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and was the center of her family. She loved gardening and was a great cook.
Mrs. Newton was preceded in death by her husband, Ludwell L. Newton; a daughter, Parthenia N. Surles; a granddaughter, Leahcim B. Newton; her parents, as well as her stepmother, Ethel V. Didlake Thurston; two sisters, Edna T. Ballard and Dorothy T. Finall; and a son-in-law, Norman D. Vickers.
She is survived by two sons, Otis L. Newton (Beverly) of King George and S. Lee Newton (Mildred), of Stafford County; and three daughters, Irene M. Newton and Linda D. Vickers, both of Spotsylvania and Carolyn F. Powell of Wendell, N.C. She is also survived by six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Annie Ruth Catlett (Robert), of Stafford; a son-in-law, Robert Surles; an uncle; an aunt; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral was held Sat. February 19 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Tim Dobson officiating. Interment followed in Mountain View Baptist Church cemetery in King George.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 6713 Passapatanzy Road, King George, Va. 22485, or to a charity of choice.

Morris Lewis Jones, Jr.

Morris Lewis Jones Jr., 77, of Rappahannock Academy died Feb. 16, 2011.
He had retired from Quantico Marine Corps Base after 32 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Arnetta Taylor Jones; three sons, James Jones, Morris Jones III and Jerry Jones; and one daughter, Jacqueline Rodriguez.
A funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 19, at Lee Funeral Home, 12055 James Madison Parkway in King George County. Interment was Monday, Feb. 21, in Quantico National Cemetery.

Halcyon Clare Burns

Halcyon Clare Burns, 85, of Dahlgren passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011.
She was born on May 28, 1926, in King George, VA, the youngest of the 10 children of the late Robert Logan and Nora Jefferson Clare.
She is survived by her husband, James Robert Burns of Dahlgren; and her three children, Marty Burns-Wolfe of Denver, and Kirk Jefferson Burns and Deb Burns-Crowl, both of King George. Halcyon also had five granddaughters, Jennifer Burns-Taylor of Garrisonville, Kirstyen Danielle Thomas of Cincinnati, Brittany Crowl Ericson of Yuma, Ariz., Lauren Elizabeth Crowl of the University of Mary Washington and Jamie Clare Crowl of Longwood University; three great-grandchildren, Robert Taylor, Victoria Jade Taylor and Christopher Taylor; and a sister, Lillian Fizer Estep of Fredericksburg.
A funeral was held Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Oakland Baptist Church, with her longtime pastor, the Rev. Guy Mattox Jr. officiating. Following the service, she was interred with her parents and siblings at Potomac Baptist Cemetery, King George. USMC Col. Daniel and Deb Burns- Crowl received family and friends following the service at their home on Poplar Neck Road, King George.
The family wishes to thank Taylor Farms of Bushwood, Md., for the loving care shown to Halcyon in her lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. A special thanks to the Hospice of St. Mary’s County, Md., for their dedication to her comfort and their many kindnesses to both Halcyon and James and their family.

Lorena Caroline Norton

Lorena Caroline Norton, 93, of King George County passed away Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011.
She was the widow of Hiram T. Norton. Lorena was a member of the Daughters of America Council No. 26 and Bethel Baptist Church. She also attended Round Hill Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Edna Dobson (Clarence), of King George; two sons, Joseph Norton of Bridgewater, Mass., and Thomas Norton (Jerri), of Somersworth, N.H.; a sister, Charlene Burton of Anaheim, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. A service will be held in Town Hill, Maine.

Lee Alan Holland

Lee Alan Holland, 68, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at his home in Westmoreland County. He had been ill with pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension.
Al was a native of North Carolina and majored in business administration at the University of NC, Chapel Hill. He retired from health care management and then worked in small construction. He was a self-taught artist and woodworker. He enjoyed golf, gardening, fossil hunting and Tar Heel sports, especially basketball. More than anything, he treasured the times he spent with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 50 years, Fran; son Dean McPherson Holland(Ginny), and their children, Dean McPherson “Mac” Holland Jr., Ryland Marshall Holland and Lauren Vaughan Holland, of Fredericksburg; son Shawn Patrick Holland(Renata), and their daughter, Evelyn Taylor “Evee” Holland and soon-to-be-born grandson, Ryder Lee Holland, of Westmoreland County; and daughter Alana Lee Holland Belanger(John), and their daughter, Harley Ann Belanger of Nevada. He was preceded in death by son Brandon Reed Holland.
He also is survived by his brothers, Tony Holland and James Cheek, his sister, Sherre Hogan, a special uncle, Richard Holland, and their families, all of NC.
In addition, he is survived by his best friend, Robert M. Ward(Doris), and their family, also of NC. He was predeceased by his mother, Emma Cheek, and his grandparents Reuben and Fannie Holland.
His body was donated to medical research. Services will be private.
Memorial contributions in Al’s name be made to MediHome Health and Hospice, 125 Olde Greenwich Drive, Suite 150, Fredericksburg, Va. 22408-2009; to Fairview Baptist Church in Fredericksburg; to an animal rescue organization; or to a charity of choice.

Aubrey Beverly

Aubrey Beverly, 73, of King George County died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Peoples Union Baptist Church, Comorn. Lee Funeral Home, King George, is handling arrangements.

Pearl Humphries Bruce

Pearl Humphries Bruce, 86, of Fredericksburg died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Heritage Hall in King George County.
Mrs. Bruce is survived by her son, Dennis W. Bruce of Ruther Glen; niece Barbara Cossey of Spotsylvania County; nephew Don Kerns of Spotsylvania; and several cousins.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Stone officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
