Area Deaths - January 19, 2011

Edna H. Dunavant

Edna H. Dunavant, 93, of Spotsylvania County, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mrs. Dunavant was preceded in death by her husband, Richard R. Dunavant Sr. She was a member of Zoan Baptist Church.
Survivors include six daughters, Doris Landram, Stella Tipton (John), Audrey Hinkle (Eugene), Shirley Curtis (Thomas), Lorene Barden and Juanita Lamoy (John), all of Spotsylvania; four sons, Richard Dunavant Jr. of Spotsylvania, Elvin Dunavant (Sharon), of Colonial Beach, Randolph Dunavant (Karen), and Eugene Dunavant (Vernell), all of Spotsylvania; a sister, Margaret Mason of Baltimore; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held on Saturday, Jan. 15, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. Peyton Wiltshire officiating. Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were David Dunavant, Michael Dunavant, Troy Curtis, Jason Lamoy, Jeff Lamoy, Scott Landram, Eugene Hinkle, Chris Dunavant and Patrick Dunavant.
Memorial donations may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407.

Carl Dean Perry

Carl Dean Perry, 63, of Spotsylvania County passed away at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011.
Carl was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Cloe Perry, and a brother, Roy Perry.
He is survived by his wife, Jena; daughter Angela Thorn (Jeff), of King George County; son Jason Perry of Beaverdam; mother Annabell Arnold; siblings Merle Perry (Nancy), of Virginia, and Jeff Perry, Arnold Buff and Nancy Haynes (Dan), all of Illinois; and six grandchildren, Kali Thorn, Donovan Thorn, Tyler Thorn, Marlena Perry, Cameron Perry and Kodiak Perry.
The family received friends on Sunday, Jan. 16, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Spotsylvania Chapel. A service was held  on Monday, Jan. 17, at the funeral home, with Pastor Linda Ray officiating. Interment followed in Rehobeth United Methodist Church cemetery in Beaverdam.

Vernon Douglas Henderson, Jr.

Vernon Douglas Henderson Jr., 57, of Fredericksburg died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011.
Doug was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in King George County. He was a lifelong resident of King George and Fredericksburg. He was a graduate of KG High School and Virginia Commonwealth University, with a major in sacred music.
Doug’s musical talents were far-reaching in the Fredericksburg community. He was organist and choir master at Trinity Episcopal Church for 38 years. He was a charter member of the Fredericksburg Chamber Chorale and worked with the Fredericksburg Festival of the Arts. He accompanied the Maranatha Choir, played with the Fredericksburg Big Band and recently was adjunct professor accompanying the Randolph-Macon College choirs.
Doug was also the sole proprietor of Henderson Piano Service for 26 years. He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman.
Doug was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Douglas Henderson Sr., and brother, Dennis Pratt Henderson.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; mother, Clarice Dennis Henderson of Virginia Beach; sister, Christa Colleen Paulosky (Bill), and two nephews, Richmond P. and Vincent J. Letterio of Virginia Beach.
A celebration of Doug’s life and music will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 825 College Ave., Fredericksburg. His ashes will be interred in the Memorial Garden at Trinity. The Rev. Kent D. Rahm will officiate. A reception will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Doug Henderson Memorial Music Fund at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Margaret Ella McDowney

Margaret Ella Richards McDowney transcended this life to her heavenly home very quietly and peacefully on Friday, Jan. 14, 2011.
She was joined in holy matrimony to John Jasper McDowney on Feb. 15, 1941. To this union five children were born, Preston, John, Elizabeth, Karen and Valerie.
Margaret was a pillar to her family and community. As the strong matriarch’s health began to decline, she still continued to check on others and offer words of encouragement.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. John J. McDowney; her daughter Valerie Rosetta McDowney; a grandson, Jeffrey McDowney; a great-grandson, Cedric “CJ” Carrington Jr.; and a grandson-in-law, Paul Cross.
Margaret leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Preston Amos (Sheryl) of Milford and John Roger (Rebecca) of Colonial Beach; two daughters, Elizabeth Jarrettus of Colonial Beach and Karen Rebecca of Fredericksburg; seven grandchildren whom she helped to raise, John R. McDowney II (Sherry), Davina N. Carrington (Cedric), Romona M. Jones, Preston A. McDowney (Jamie), Dominique M. Berryman (Anthony), Norman Johnson III and Preshel L. McDowney, and many other loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Veola McDowney (Evelyn) of Fort Washington, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 19, at First Baptist Church, Colonial Beach. A viewing will be held prior to the services, from 10 a.m. to noon at the church.
Interment will be in the Rev. John J. Jasper McDowney family cemetery, Colonial Beach.

Wilbur Presley Allen

Wilbur Presley Allen, 71, of King George County passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at Mary Washington Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Potomac Baptist Church in King George.
Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, is handling the services.
