June Sylvester Long,

June Sylvester Long, 82, of Colonial Beach died Thursday, May 13, 2010. She was born on June 12, 1927.
A memorial service was held Saturday, July 31, 2010, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 203 Dennison St., Colonial Beach.

Roy N. Mullins

Roy N. Mullins, 62, of Partlow passed away Saturday, July 24, 2010, at his home.
He was the son late Herschel “Jack” and Reba Maggard Mullins. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a truck driver and plumber.
Roy is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mildred; a daughter, Ruby Burcham (John), of Partlow; two sons, Joseph Mullins (Tina), of Partlow and James Mullins of King George County; his sister, Uva Branham of Richmond; and three grandchildren, Jackie Mullins, Kyle Burcham and Ashleigh Burcham, all of Partlow.
A funeral was held at the Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service-Spotsylvania Chapel on Wednesday, July 28, with the Rev. Jerry Mullins officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family asks that memorial donations in Roy’s name be made to the American Cancer Society.

Elsie Lavern Clatterbuck

Elsie Lavern Clatterbuck, 75, of King George County died Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Golden Living Center.
She is survived by three sons, Eric Clatterbuck, Antonia Clatterbuck and Tracey Clatterbuck.
A funeral was held Saturday, July 31, at St. Stephens Baptist Church in King George, with Bishop-elect Anthony Jones officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

George William Garbers

George William Garbers, 85, of Colonial Beach passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010, at his residence.
George had retired from the U.S. Navy as a master chief gunner’s mate with 24 years of service. He also retired from the University of California at Los Alamos, N.M., and was a member of VFW Post 10574, Colonial Beach.
George is survived by his wife, Valerie Garbers, of the home; three daughters, Paula Johnson of Oregon, Randi Sue Robertson of Missouri and Kali Rose Garbers of Colonial Beach; three sons, Mark Garbers of Alaska, George William Garbers Jr. and Christopher Carl Garbers, both of Colonial Beach; a brother, Charles A. Garbers of Alexandria; two grandchildren, George William Garbers III and Elizabeth Ann Garbers, both of Colonial Beach.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2010, in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington.

Lydia Kelly Connelly

Lydia Kelly Connelly, 94, of Fredericksburg died Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Connelly was the widow of Richard Franklin Connelly, who passed in January 1987.
She worked at the Public Works Department at Dahlgren, retiring in the ‘70s.
Survivors include her daughters, retired Lt. Col. Vivian Connelly of Fredericksburg and Felicia Cox (Richard), of Fallston, Md.; three granddaughters, Lydia Diklich (Donald), Donna Sue Cox, and Amy Phillips (Brett); and one great-grandson, Julian Cox.
A graveside service was held Saturday, July 31, in Oak Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Nancy Compher officiating.

Helen Thayer

Helen Thayer, 97, of King George County died peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 28, 2010.
A lifelong resident of King George, Mrs. Thayer was a homemaker and former co-owner of a country store in the county with her husband, the late James P. Thayer Sr.  The Thayers were married for 77 years.
She was a former member of Oakland Baptist Church of King George.
Survivors include her son, James P. Thayer Jr. (Amy) of King George, her caregivers. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Monday, Aug. 2, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. Interment was in Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens in King George.

James H. Bland

Deacon James H. Bland, 91, of Dahlgren died Thursday, July 31, 2010, at Hearts at Home in Dahlgren.
Mr. Bland worked as rigger leader at Naval Surface Warfare Center-Dahlgren until retiring in 1974. He was a member of Little Ark Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Deacon Ministry and former member of the men’s Jubilee Chorus.
He is survived by his son, William Bland of Dahlgren; four daughters, Dorothy Johnson of Dahlgren, and Eleanor Norris, Joann Barnes and Joan Freeman, all of Houston, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Little Ark Baptist Church, in Owens, with the Rev. Michael T. Bell serving as eulogist and the Rev. W.L. McKinley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Remains may be viewed Friday at the funeral home, starting at noon, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., and also one hour prior to the service at the church.

Edward Brown

Edward Brown, 81, of Colonial Beach passed on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Westmoreland Rehabilitation & Heath Care Center in Colonial Beach.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at First Baptist Church in Colonial Beach, with a viewing Saturday morning from 10 until the funeral time at the church. Interment will be in Meadow-Brooke Memorial Gardens in King George.
Arrangements are by Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home, Warsaw.

Francene King Barber

Francene King Barber, 80, of Irvington, formerly of Warsaw, passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, at Westminster Canterbury.
Mrs. Barber was preceded in death by her son Lewis, and grandson Luke.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, John Clark Barber Sr.; a son, John C. Barber Jr. (Grace); grandsons Carlton “Carl” (Sabrina), and Philip Scott Barber.
She was born in Currituck, N.C., attended high school in south Norfolk, and graduated from Meredith College, Raleigh, N.C.
She lived with her husband, a forester in southern cities. While living in Macon, Ga., she taught several subjects at A.L. Miller High School, and later in high schools in Alexandria. While in New Orleans, she became a licensed tour guide, and later a guide in Washington, D.C.
After moving to the Northern Neck in 1986, she continued to work in travel and tourism. She was chairman of the Northern Neck Tourism Council, and represented Richmond County on the board of Potomac Gateway Welcome Center and rose to chairman. After working in the Richmond County Tricentennial Celebration in 1992, she became an organizer of the Richmond County Museum and directed an all-volunteer staff and organization until her retirement in 2008.
A noteworthy project she completed was the restoration of the 1926 William Atkinson Jones Memorial, a gift from a grateful Philippine people.
Recently, Mrs. Barber co-authored the book “Warsaw,” a pictorial depiction of Warsaw, Va. She also served on the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church and was very active in the Episcopal churches in the communities where she lived.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richmond County Museum, Box 884, Warsaw, Va. 22572 or Saint John’s Episcopal Church, Box 1083, Warsaw, Va. 22572.
A funeral will he held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, with interment following in Emmanuel Cemetery, Emmerton. Online condolences may be made at welchfuneral homeva.com.
