Robert F. Whitestone, Jr.
Robert F. "Skip" Whitestone, Jr. age 77, died Monday, December 8, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital. Formerly of Alexandria, Skip graduated from George Washington High School in 1950 and went on to complete an apprenticeship program to become a Brick Mason After serving in the Navy on the USS Hailey from 1953 until 1957, he worked with many craftsmen of his trade as Foreman and Construction Superintendent in the Washington area. His retirement to Colonial Beach, VA in 1991 was filled with part time work for a defense contractor in Dahlgren and many happy days golfing and fishing. Mr. Whitestone was a lifelong member of the Old Dominion Boat Club in Alexandria, having joined as a junior oarsman while rowing crew, attaining Golden Membership in 1997.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth "Betty", his son Robert F. III and daughter-in-law Sara, daughter Margaret and her husband Frank McConnell, his grandchildren Adrienne and Paul Whitestone, Elizabeth and Kelly McConnell. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Alice McCinnell. Also survived by three brothers, one sister and many other friends and family members.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria on Dec. 16, 2008. Internment followed at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Michael Thomas Stephens
Michael Thomas Stephens, 59, of Essex County died at his home Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008.
Born in Fredericksburg, he was the owner and operator of M&S Trucking in Caret. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Stephens of Essex; a son, Leanord Taylor of Fredericksburg; two stepsons, David S. Cling of Richmond and Justin W. Stephens of Essex; his mother, Elizabeth Stephens of Fredericksburg; a sister, Barbara Kerr of Sarasota, Fla.; and three brothers, Vincent Stephens of Beaverdam, Jerry Stephens of Champlain and Kenneth Stephens of King George County. He was the son of the late Gustave C. Stephens.
A funeral was held Dec.13, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, with the Rev. Sherman Davis officiating. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park, King George.

George E. Noland, III
George E. Noland III, 73, of Colonial Beach died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at Mary Washington Hospital of cancer.
He was a former member of the U.S. Army and a retired truck driver.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Noland; three children, Cathy McIntire, Robert McIntire and Leo McIntire and his wife, Barbara; two brothers, Benny Noland and Billy Noland; and six grandchildren.
A funeral was held on Dec. 13, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, with the Rev. Beth-Marie Helmbrecht officiating. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park, King George.
John "Jack" Gilliland
John "Jack" Gilliland, 85, also known as "Pop," of Colonial Beach passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2008.
Formerly from Rockhill Furnace, Pa., he was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Mount Union, Pa., the son of Boyd Gilliland and Florence Hooper Gilland Madden.
Mr. Gilliland was a U.S. Army veteran during World World II and an American Legion member. Jack was a brakeman for the East Brood Top, the Pennsylvanian and Western Maryland railroads. He retired from the guard force at Navy Support Facility at Dahlgren.
Jack is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marjorie Gil Gilliland; two daughters, Bonnie McWhirt and son-in-law Douglas of Fredericksburg, and Debbie Poe of Front Royal; three sons, Terry Gilliland and daughter-in-law Vicki of Colonial Beach, Steve Gilliland of Fredericksburg and John Gilliland of Port Royal. He is also survived by one sister, four brothers, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A private funeral will be held at a later date.
Donald Edward Kemp
Donald Edward Kemp, 82, of Colonial Beach died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Westmoreland County, Mr. Kemp served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked at J.W. Masters and Ware Oil Co., and was a waterman for many years.
Mr. Kemp was preceded in death by three sisters, Frances Elizabeth K. Jenkins, Elizabeth Kemp and Evelyn K. Wilkins; and two brothers, Allen "Buddy" Kemp and Franklin "Wolf" Kemp.
Survivors include two brothers, Bobby Kemp of Manassas, and Frankie Kemp of Clinton, Md. Mr. Kemp also is survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
A funeral will be held Dec. 15, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, with the Rev. Willard Bowen officiating. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery, Oak Grove.

Leonard H. "Pete" Moran
Leonard H. "Pete" Moran, 70, of Colonial Beach died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Moran had retired from the federal government.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Moran of the home; three sons, John Moran and his wife, Cindy, Ricky Moran and his wife, Penny, and Scott Moran; one daughter, Susan Vaughan; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held on Dec. 16, at Round Hill Baptist Church in King George County, with the Rev. Ted James officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Virginia Ann Payne
Virginia Ann Payne, 52, of King George County died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Mary Washington Hospital following a long illness.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy C. Wood and her husband, Victor F. Williams, of King George; her two stepchildren, Lynne and Danny Payne; two sisters; two brothers, five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on Dec. 15 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, King George. A private burial will follow.

Ellen Flannery Pogue
On Sunday December 14, 2008, Ellen Flannery Pogue, passed away in her sleep in King George, VA.
Born in Washington, D.C. to John Joseph and Mary Catherine Flannery on January 18, 1921, she married Edward Clinton Pogue from Chambersburg, PA who preceded her in death.
Also preceding her in death were sons Edward C. Pogue, Jr. and Bobby Pogue as well as a grandson Edward C. Pogue III.
Surviving are her sons, Michael of Arlington, and Stephen of Fairfax, and three daughters, Margaret Cook of Fairfax, Katherine Geiger of Falls Church, and Ruth Titsworth of King George, VA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday December 20, 2008 at Shiloh Baptist Church, 13457 Kings Highway, King George, VA with Pastor Todd Kube officiating. A reception will follow the service. Burial will be private in Chambersburg, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Shiloh Baptist Church's Building Fund.
Rev. Dorothy S. Finn
The Reverend Dorothy Stevenson Finn, 48, died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at MeadowView Terrace in Clarksville, VA. She was the daughter of Florence I. Finn and the late Eugene H. Finn .
She graduated from Union Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity and then the Presbyterian School of Christian Education with a Master of Christian Education degree. She served the Presbyterian community as pastor, most recently at Clarksville Presbyterian Church in Clarksville, VA.
In addition to her mother, Dorothy is survived by her brother, David Finn, and her sister and brother-in-law, Elfie and Michael Finn-Mckenzie of King George. Her nieces Kristin Finn-McKenzie Lam and husband Patrick; and Bethany finn-McKenzie also survive her.
Funeral services will be held at 2p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008 at Clarksville Presbyterian Church. Graveside service will be held at 1p.pm. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008 at Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, PA.
